What should I look for when buying a used Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: The Elantra Hybrid has a 1.6-litre inline-four running on the Atkinson Cycle, a 1.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack, and a single electric motor. Together, they're good for 139 hp and 125 lb-ft. Hyundai doesn't fit its hybrids with a CVT like most automakers. Instead, the Elantra Hybrid has a six-speed dual-clutch transmission similar to the N Line's seven-speed. Fuel economy is superb, rated at 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 4.5 on the highway, and 4.7 combined.
• Infotainment: A 10.25-inch touchscreen is now standard on the Luxury trim and above. The Essential and Preferred have an 8-inch touchscreen, but to avoid a barren of black plastic around that smaller screen, Hyundai wisely moved the shortcut buttons and the volume and tuning knobs to surround it.

Which Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2024 Hyundai Elantra offers these trims:

• Essential: The entry trim brings the 2.0-litre engine, CVT, and the core Elantra formula at the lowest price point, making it the value-focused starting point.
• Preferred: This trim adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit assist, so it suits buyers who want more everyday driver-assistance coverage.
• Luxury: The Luxury trim adds the 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument panel, eight-speaker Bose stereo, wireless charging pad, and Highway Driving Assist, making it the best-value trim for many shoppers.
• N Line Ultimate: This trim adds the 1.6-litre turbo-four, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, sportier hardware, and the more expressive look that suits drivers who want the Elantra’s most engaging character.
• N: The performance-focused N adds the 276-hp 2.0-litre turbo, eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and track-capable tuning for buyers who want the most powerful Elantra.

What Hyundai Elantra do most buyers choose?

The Hyundai Elantra years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

These higher-volume years tend to attract more shoppers because they offer a strong mix of availability, newer features, and broad appeal. They also give you more choice across trims and price points, which makes it easier to find the right Elantra for your budget.

What is the Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The table shows broad year-over-year price declines across the Elantra lineup, which can work in your favour if you’re shopping used. The drops are double-digit in every listed model year, so buyers are seeing meaningful movement in prices rather than small adjustments. That creates more room to compare trims and model years on value.

The 2015, 2016, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Hyundai Elantra safe?

• 2024: 6/10

• 2022: 9/10
• 2021: 9/10
• 2020: 8/10
• 2019: 9/10
• 2017: 10/10

For the safest used buy, the 2017 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.

Should I buy a used Hyundai Elantra now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2025 model is at −12.53% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −11.26%.
• Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.2% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 32.7%.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $22,547 CAD. The Hyundai Elantra offers roomy cabin space, strong value, and a broad trim spread that makes it easy to match your budget and priorities.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: As an affordable, mass-market car, you would reasonably expect the Elantra to offer one powertrain. Instead, there are four engines and five transmissions, each of which share a front-wheel drive (FWD) layout and four cylinders.
• Tech: A 10.25-inch touchscreen is now standard on the Luxury trim and above. The Essential and Preferred have an 8-inch touchscreen, but to avoid a barren of black plastic around that smaller screen, Hyundai wisely moved the shortcut buttons and the volume and tuning knobs to surround it.
• Safety: Standard safety features on the 2024 Hyundai Elantra in Canada include a simple forward braking assist system, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, lane following assist, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor.
• Starting price: The 2024 Hyundai Elantra starts in Canada at $24,559 for the Essential trim, including the $1,825 destination charge and other fees.

If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
