What should I look for when buying a used Honda HR-V?

Key things to evaluate:

• Fuel efficiency: Honda installs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine under the HR-V’s hood. It produces 158 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 138 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm in a vehicle that weighs up to 1,510 kilograms (3,336 pounds). One might expect impressive fuel economy as the reward for putting up with the meek acceleration. However, official Natural Resources Canada ratings say the HR-V will burn 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres in combined city and highway driving with front-wheel drive (FWD) or 8.7 L/100 km combined with AWD.

Which Honda HR-V trim should I buy?

The 2026 Honda HR-V offers these trims:

• LX: The entry trim brings the HR-V’s core practicality and is the least expensive way into the lineup; adding AWD costs extra here, while it is standard on the higher trims.
• Sport: This trim adds standard AWD, a 6-speaker audio system, and a black 18-inch wheel design, making it a strong value if you want more equipment without moving to the top trim.
• EX-L: The best-value trim for shoppers who want the most upscale feel, with genuine leather seating, perforated surfaces, Z-pattern stitching, front footwell lighting, silver steering wheel spokes, an 8-speaker audio system, and the most premium cabin detailing.

What Honda HR-V do most buyers choose?

The Honda HR-V years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they combine newer features, broad availability, and a strong mix of pricing and equipment. More listings also give you a better chance of finding the colour, trim, and condition you want.

What is the Honda HR-V's resale value?

Most Honda HR-V model years are down year over year, which can work in your favour if you’re shopping used. The biggest drops are in the double-digit range, while a few newer and mid-cycle years are falling more slowly. That pattern suggests there are still opportunities to find value across the lineup.

The 2017, 2023, and 2024 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Honda HR-V safe?

• 2026: 6/10
• 2023: 8/10

Honda equips every HR-V with Honda Sensing, a collection of driver assist features.

For the safest used buy, the 2023 model posts the highest confirmed score of 8/10.
