Why it stands out

The 2026 Volvo XC90 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that blends elegant Scandinavian design with family-friendly practicality. Volvo positions it as a flagship SUV with three rows of seating, and its appeal is broad enough to suit both families and buyers who want a sophisticated but practical vehicle. It also has a clear identity as a safety-focused and eco-conscious alternative in the segment.

Inside, the XC90’s cabin is one of its biggest strengths. The interior uses a vertical touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, along with top-quality materials and a layout that makes access easy. Space is good in the second row, and Volvo says the third row can comfortably accommodate people up to 5’7” tall. Some versions also feature a crystal gear shifter made by Orrefors, which adds a distinctive touch of luxury.

The 2026 XC90 also offers a wide range of powertrains and standard equipment. The T5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower, the T6 is twincharged and produces 316 horsepower, and the T8 plug-in hybrid delivers up to 400 horsepower while also offering impressive fuel economy. Standard all-wheel drive is included on Canadian second-generation XC90s, and the safety suite includes City Safety, Pilot Assist, and a 360-degree camera system. Buyers should note that base models are underpowered, and the model can bring high maintenance costs, while plug-in hybrid versions may be worth watching for premature battery wear and minor infotainment glitches.
