Why it stands out

The 2026 Toyota Tacoma stands out because it builds on a long reputation for durability while adding a much more modern feel than earlier versions. Toyota gave this generation a totally new frame, a remade interior, and new engines, including the first-ever hybrid drivetrain offered in a Tacoma. In Canada, the base engine is a 278-horsepower 2.4-litre turbo four-cylinder that is described as delivering power and speed similar to the old V6 but with better fuel economy, while the hybrid makes 326 horsepower and achieves a combined fuel consumption of 10.0 litres per 100 kilometres. That combination makes the truck feel more current without abandoning the Tacoma’s traditional appeal as a capable midsize pickup.

It is also notably well equipped for everyday use. The full-crew Double Cab is the default configuration in Canada, and a standard 8.0-inch screen with Toyota’s latest software is paired with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Hybrid trucks get a larger 14-inch display, and wireless charging is available. The suspension setup is another distinction: while some U.S. trucks get traditional leaf springs, Canada gets a multi-link rear suspension that is meant to improve on- and off-road handling. Toyota also keeps a strong set of standard safety features, which helps explain why the Tacoma remains appealing to buyers who want a truck that is both trail-capable and easy to live with.

There are still a few trade-offs. A manual transmission remains optional, but it is described as not much fun to use, and these trucks are still so new that they are not generally available used right now. Even so, the 2026 Toyota Tacoma’s mix of stronger technology, improved road manners, and long-standing Tacoma toughness makes it one of the more distinctive choices in the midsize truck segment.
