Why it stands out

The 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out as a practical three-row family SUV with a long reputation for efficiency and dependability. It was the first mass-market hybrid with seating for seven passengers, and that family-first mission remains central to its appeal. The cabin is designed around versatility, with three rows of seats and the ability to open up a large cargo area by folding the second and third rows. It also benefits from standard all-wheel drive, which adds confidence when conditions turn slippery.

For 2026, the Highlander Hybrid sits at the end of its generation, with Toyota planning a fully electric Highlander for 2027. This model uses a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain paired with a continuously variable transmission, and Toyota’s all-wheel-drive system uses a third electric motor to drive the rear axle rather than a traditional mechanical link. That setup helps deliver strong traction while improving efficiency, with Natural Resources Canada estimating combined fuel consumption at 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres. Standard safety equipment is another strength, including Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 or better, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring.

The Highlander Hybrid’s appeal is also rooted in its everyday usability. It offers a smart cabin, available seating for eight depending on trim, and a useful mix of technology and safety features. At the same time, it is not the most exciting vehicle to drive, and its third row is still best suited to children. Towing capacity is also limited, so buyers looking for maximum utility may want to weigh that carefully. Even so, for shoppers who want a reliable, efficient, and well-equipped family hauler, the 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid remains a compelling choice.
