Why it stands out

The 2026 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it blends a long-running off-road identity with a much more modern package. Toyota gave this generation a complete tech and powertrain overhaul, while keeping the body-on-frame layout and standard four-wheel drive in Canada. It also shares a platform with the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks, which helps reinforce its truck-based character even as the exterior design stays closer to an evolution than a dramatic departure.

What makes the 2026 model especially distinctive is how much equipment it brings to the table. The non-hybrid i-Force engine is a 2.4-litre turbo with 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, while the i-Force Max hybrid delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft and is described as the most powerful 4Runner to date. Both engines use a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The new 4Runner also gets Toyota’s latest infotainment system with natural voice commands and an 8-inch base screen, plus standard blind-spot monitoring, fabric seats, a tow hitch receiver, and a power rear window. A third row is still available, though only with non-hybrid models.

For buyers, the appeal is the mix of rugged capability and everyday convenience. The lineup at launch includes SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter, giving the 2026 Toyota 4Runner a wide spread from practical to more premium or off-road-focused. The Trailhunter trim is especially well equipped for rough terrain, with 33-inch off-road tyres, ARB’s Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks, extra ground clearance, a high-mounted air intake, high-strength steel skid plates, an integrated 20-inch LED light bar, and colour-selectable LED fog lights. On the downside, this generation is still very new, so there are not many used examples yet, and the 4Runner’s traditional strengths still come with the familiar trade-off of a truck-like driving experience.
