Why it stands out

The 2026 Toyota 4Runner stands out because it combines a full redesign with the rugged, body-on-frame character that has long defined the nameplate. It shares a platform with the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks, and in Canada it comes with standard four-wheel drive. Toyota also moved it to a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and hybrid powertrain setup, with the non-hybrid i-Force engine rated at 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque and the i-Force Max hybrid rated at 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. Both engines use a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which helps make this generation feel thoroughly modern without abandoning its off-road roots.

The 2026 model also brings a stronger technology story than earlier 4Runners. It gets Toyota’s latest infotainment system with natural voice commands and a larger 8-inch base screen, along with standard blind-spot monitoring, fabric seats, a tow hitch receiver, and a power rear window. Trim choices at launch range from the more mainstream SR5 and TRD Sport to the off-road-focused TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter, while the Platinum is aimed at buyers wanting a more luxurious feel. The Trailhunter in particular is the most specialised, with 33-inch off-road tyres, Old Man Emu shocks, extra ground clearance, a high-mounted air intake, skid plates, an integrated 20-inch LED light bar, and colour-selectable LED fog lights.

For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2026 Toyota 4Runner offers serious capability, modern safety and infotainment features, and a broader spread of trims than before. It is still a large, truck-based SUV, so it is not trying to be the most car-like choice in the segment, but that is also part of its charm. The available third row is limited to non-hybrid models, which may matter to shoppers who need maximum seating flexibility.
