Its quiet cabin and modern technology also point to a vehicle that should feel composed in everyday use.

From the performance side, the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder mild-hybrid setup is described as strong, and the GLE is also noted for its towing ability and off-road hardware. On the cost side, Mercedes includes a four-year/80,000-kilometre warranty with free roadside assistance, which helps with early ownership confidence.

• Powertrain: The GLE 450 uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, making 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The GLE earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS, but its front crash prevention tech earned low ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, automatic high-beam headlights, Pre-Safe Sound, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, and a semi-automated parking system. Many of the more advanced driver aids are bundled into the Driver Assistance Package, which adds adaptive cruise control, lane keep and centring assist, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking assist, and speed-management functions tied to road signs, curves, and following distances.

A notable caveat is that the route-based speed-adjustment feature can be intrusive, and the automated lane-change assist function behaved inconsistently in testing.
