Is the 2026 Honda HR-V a good car?

The 2026 Honda HR-V earns an expert rating of 5.3/10.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.

It is a simple, uncomplicated subcompact SUV that suits you best if you value ease of use over flash. The refresh brings a larger touchscreen, faster response times, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless smartphone charging, which helps the HR-V feel more current.

The trade-offs are clear: it is sluggish, its fuel economy is poor, and the back seat is uncomfortable.

With 35.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 Honda HR-V reliable?

The 2026 Honda HR-V is presented as a straightforward, easy-to-live-with SUV with strong safety credentials and a simple mechanical layout.

Its 2.0-litre engine and CVT are described as working hard, but the drivetrain itself is conventional rather than complicated. The HR-V also uses a multi-link rear suspension and a brake-based torque vectoring system, which supports its everyday drivability.

Honda’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which is a small ownership perk.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about complexity and more about living with the HR-V’s weak performance and disappointing real-world fuel economy over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 Honda HR-V?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX, Sport, and EX-L are the three trims. The LX is the most basic, with cloth seats and a 17-inch grey wheel design, while the Sport adds standard all-wheel drive and 18-inch black wheels. The EX-L is the most upscale, with genuine leather, perforated surfaces, Z-pattern stitching, upgraded cabin lighting, and the most premium interior presentation.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT. It is described as underpowered, especially when merging, passing, or climbing hills.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centring assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard, while front and rear parking sensors with low-speed automatic braking are exclusive to the EX-L.
• Infotainment: The standard touchscreen is 9 inches, and it includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus a wireless smartphone charger. Built-in navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio are not included, and the base LX has four speakers, the Sport has six, and the EX-L has eight.
• Fuel efficiency: Official Natural Resources Canada ratings say the HR-V uses 8.3 L/100 km combined with front-wheel drive or 8.7 L/100 km combined with AWD. In testing, it averaged 9.5 L/100 km.

Which 2026 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?

The 2026 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX-L.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, but it is also the least equipped. You get the basics, and AWD costs extra here, so it makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the added equipment found on the higher trims.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds standard AWD and more equipment than the LX without jumping all the way to the top-spec model. If you want the most balanced mix of price and features, this is the one to focus on.
• EX-L: This is the most upscale choice, with leather upholstery, upgraded cabin details, the best audio system, and the parking sensors with low-speed automatic braking. It suits you best if comfort and convenience matter more than value.

Honda Sensing is standard across the range, and blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert are included on every trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2026 Honda HR-V?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 181 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.54% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,451 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2026 Honda HR-V's resale value?

The current average of $35,451 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,627 CAD.

That price movement suggests the HR-V has softened enough to give used buyers more leverage than they had a year ago. If you are planning to sell later, you should expect the market to remain sensitive to mileage, condition, and trim level rather than assuming the HR-V will hold its value exceptionally well on its own.

For you as a future seller, the current trend means pricing competitively will matter. A well-kept EX-L may still attract stronger interest than a base model, but the broader market is clearly leaning in the buyer’s favour right now.

Is the 2026 Honda HR-V safe?

The 2026 Honda HR-V earns favourable ratings from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). For the 2025 model year, the HR-V also scored a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centring assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard in Canada.

One caveat is that the adaptive cruise control did not always react smoothly in testing, sometimes braking unexpectedly or responding slowly in traffic, so you should not treat the driver aids as fully seamless.

Should I buy a 2026 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.54% compared with last year.
• The refresh matters to you because it adds a larger touchscreen, faster response times, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless smartphone charging.

The bottom line: If you want the newest HR-V with the updated infotainment setup and you can find a well-priced example, the 2026 model is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may deliver a similar ownership experience for less money, especially if you are willing to give up the refresh-related tech updates.
