Why it stands out

The 2025 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as the final chapter for Chevrolet’s long-running sedan, which makes it distinctive before anything else. By this point, the Malibu had already built a reputation as a roomy, good-value family car, and the most recent generation was described as more sophisticated, more comfortable, and more reliable than the Malibus that came before it. It also brought sleek styling, a larger and more open-feeling back seat, and a broad spread of trims and powertrains that gave buyers some choice in how they wanted the car to feel.

For this generation, the Malibu’s appeal came from its mix of practicality and technology. The standard engine was a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, while a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque was available on upper trims. A hybrid was also offered, pairing a 1.8-litre four-cylinder with a 76-kW electric motor for a total output of 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, along with a combined fuel economy rating of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres. The cabin featured Chevrolet’s MyLink system on a seven-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an eight-inch screen available on upper trims and standard on Premier trim, and later updates added wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

There are still some trade-offs to keep in mind. Reviewers found the standard 1.5-litre turbo to be lacklustre in acceleration, and the Malibu was not quite as refined as rivals such as the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Its safety equipment also evolved over time rather than arriving fully loaded, and some active safety features were not standard until 2022. Even so, the 2025 Malibu remains appealing as a spacious, easy-to-live-with sedan that offers strong value, useful technology, and the distinction of being Chevrolet’s last production sedan.
