Is the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Yes — the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Form and function, and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its powerful engine, comfortable and spacious interior, and well-equipped features. Many also like the design and luxury feel, which helps it stand out if you want a pickup that can work hard and still feel upscale. On the other hand, some owners mention infotainment reliability concerns and the need for a data plan, which can matter if you plan to rely heavily on connected features.

That mix fits the Sierra’s role as a truck that can be a basic work vehicle, an off-roader, or a luxurious long-distance cruiser. Even with those strengths, the market still shows 34.5% of listings as good or great deals, so you can shop selectively.

The expert drive notes also support that impression by highlighting smooth power delivery and a well-mannered automatic transmission.

There are still some ownership risks to keep in mind, especially around infotainment concerns and emissions-control complaints raised by some owners. For used buyers, that means you should pay close attention to service history and verify that the truck’s tech and powertrain have been behaving properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from Pro to Denali Ultimate, with the base Pro aimed at fleets and the higher trims leaning into luxury or off-road use. The Pro is the most basic-looking version, while Denali and Denali Ultimate add more upscale touches such as a large chrome grille, available 22-inch wheels, and power running boards.
• Powertrain: You can find a 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, 5.3-litre V8, 6.2-litre V8, or 3.0-litre Duramax turbodiesel. The diesel stands out for strong torque and smooth, linear delivery, while the V8s bring more traditional full-size-truck power.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and a rear-seat reminder. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, park assist, and the Safety Alert driver’s seat are optional, and Super Cruise is available on Denali and Denali Ultimate models.
• Infotainment: Base Pro models use a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SLE and higher trims get a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.4-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Google Built-In.
• Fuel efficiency: The Duramax diesel is rated at 9.2 L/100 km combined with RWD and 9.6 L/100 km combined with 4WD. The TurboMax four-cylinder can achieve 12 L/100 km combined in some configurations, while the V8s land in the 14 to 16 L/100 km range.

Which 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the Sierra’s core capability without paying for upscale extras. It comes with the most basic infotainment setup, so it suits buyers who care more about utility than features.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the larger digital display and the 13.4-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity and Google Built-In. If you want the Sierra to feel modern without jumping deep into luxury pricing, this is the trim to target.
• Elevation: This trim builds on the SLE formula with a more distinctive appearance, making it a good fit if you want a more stylish truck without moving into premium territory.
• SLT: This is the step-up choice for buyers who want a more upscale daily driver and are willing to pay for it. It sits in the middle of the range and is a sensible move if you want more comfort and presence than the lower trims provide.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented pick, and it adds a 5-centimetre lift kit, Rancho monotube shocks, a locking rear differential, and skid plates. It also gets the Duramax diesel as standard for 2024, which makes it especially appealing if you want rugged capability with strong torque.
• AT4X: Choose this if you want the most serious off-road hardware in the regular lineup, including a front locker and Multimatic DSSV dampers. It is the trim for buyers who want the Sierra’s toughest character.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with the signature chrome grille and available premium convenience features. It is the right fit if you want the Sierra to feel more upscale than utilitarian.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top luxury trim, and it is the one to buy if you want the most comfort and the richest feature set. It also pairs especially well with the diesel powertrain for long-distance use.

Super Cruise is available on Denali and Denali Ultimate models, so those trims are the ones to consider if hands-free highway driving matters to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 GMC Sierra 1500?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.

• Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,663 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.93% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $54,754 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $54,754 CAD sits slightly below last year's $65,912 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more truck for the money today, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment. If prices stay closer to the current average than the prior year’s level, owners may need to price more aggressively to move a used Sierra 1500.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2024 Sierra 1500 Crew Cab received a Good score in the driver-side small overlap front crash test, Good scores in the original moderate overlap front and side crash tests, and an Acceptable score in the updated side crash test from IIHS. It also earned five-star ratings for overall safety and side-crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in rollover and frontal crash testing.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and a rear-seat reminder. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and park assist are optional, and Super Cruise is available on Denali and Denali Ultimate models.

The uneven IIHS results are the main caveat here, especially the passenger-side small overlap result and the updated side-crash score. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to trim and option content rather than assuming every Sierra 1500 is equally equipped.

Should I buy a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.93% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2024 brings a broad trim range, strong powertrain choice, and available Super Cruise.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $49,536 CAD, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $54,754 CAD average.
• It pushes full-size pickup luxury further with the Denali Ultimate trim.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-market value, features, and broad configuration choice, the 2024 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front and you still want a highly equipped Sierra, the 2023 is the more budget-friendly path.
