Summary

Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a crossover SUV that feels more upscale in appearance and more enjoyable to drive than many of its primary competitors. It also has a stylish design and great handling, which helps give it a more polished character than many shoppers might expect in this segment.
Practicality is another major part of its appeal. The Tiguan is larger inside than many of its rivals, and it is one of two vehicles in its segment to offer a third-row seat. It also offers plenty of cargo space, making it a strong choice for buyers who want everyday usefulness along with a more refined driving experience.
That said, the Tiguan is not without drawbacks. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, its ergonomic design is poor, and its technology is unintuitive, so buyers who are easily frustrated by tech may find those issues hard to overlook.

The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan proves to be a versatile and well-rounded crossover that offers a comfortable ride, ample space, and a range of modern features. During my recent test drive, the Tiguan demonstrated its ability to cater to both daily commuting and family adventures, making it a compelling choice in the compact SUV segment. As I approached the Tiguan, its sleek and modern design immediately caught my eye. The confident stance, stylish LED lighting, and chrome accents give it a premium feel. The Tiguan strikes a harmonious balance between sportiness and sophistication, making it an attractive option for those seeking an elegant yet adventurous presence on the road.

I love all the cars features. Great value, rides great. The only thing missing is an automatic lift rear trunk, although that is not available on this year and not a dealership issue, however it’s not that big of a deal. I love the feel of the seating and sleekness of the German design.

Prices have softened 18.45% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 754 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable range of choices.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
It stands out as a crossover SUV that feels more upscale in appearance and more enjoyable to drive than many of its primary competitors. It also has a stylish design and great handling, which helps give it a more polished character than many shoppers might expect in this segment.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, the ergonomic design is poor, and the technology is unintuitive. If you want everyday usefulness with a more refined driving experience, it fits that brief well.
30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which points to a market with some room for selective shopping.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Tiguan is described as solidly assembled, with robust construction and a cabin that feels upscale for the class. Its overall value is also helped by its interior room and utility, along with a complimentary subscription to Car-Net Remote Access.
The powertrain is not the smoothest or most powerful in the segment, and the infotainment interface can be frustrating to use. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is more about living with the quirks than worrying about basic durability.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim includes keyless entry with remote start and an 8-way power driver’s seat, while higher trims add a more upscale look, larger wheels, adaptive front lighting, and a light bar across the grille. The base trim also misses some of the richer cabin materials and top-spec features that make the Tiguan feel more premium.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In Canada, 4Motion all-wheel drive is standard, and the powertrain is tuned more for everyday use than strong acceleration.
- Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, and IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models. That package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active blind-spot monitoring, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
- Infotainment: Lower trims use a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while other Tiguans have an 8-inch touchscreen. R-Line trims get a larger 10.25-inch digital display, and higher trims can include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, Car-Net connected services, SiriusXM 360L, and a nine-speaker Fender premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the R-Line trims should average 9.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 10.4 L/100 km on a testing loop.
Which 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black, and Highline R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- Trendline: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Tiguan experience with standard keyless entry, remote start, and an 8-way power driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the Tiguan’s space and safety without paying for extra appearance or convenience upgrades.
- Comfortline: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more equipment while staying below the R-Line versions. It should suit you if you want a more balanced mix of features and price.
- Comfortline R-Line Black: This trim adds the sportier R-Line styling, which gives the Tiguan a more distinctive look. Choose it if appearance matters to you and you want a step up from the mainstream trims.
- Highline R-Line: This is the most upscale version, with the richest cabin presentation, larger 20-inch machined-finish wheels, adaptive front lighting, and the light bar across the grille. It also brings the top-spec feel that best matches the Tiguan’s premium-leaning character.
IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models, so safety equipment improves as you move up the range.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some confidence if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 754 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.45% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $27,276 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $27,370 CAD sits slightly below last year's $33,561 CAD.
That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Tiguan more attractive to used buyers today. For a future seller, it also means resale expectations should be realistic unless the vehicle is especially well equipped or priced aggressively.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The 2023 Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, though NHTSA testing is incomplete and NHTSA also says the driver’s door unlatched and opened during the side-impact test.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
All Tiguans have standard Front Assist and Side Assist. Front Assist includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Side Assist adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Volkswagen also includes an Automatic Post Collision Braking System.
IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models. It adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, active blind-spot monitoring that counter-steers to help avoid collisions, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Park Assist, parking sensors with low-speed automatic braking, and an Area View surround-view camera system are also available.
Should I buy a 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines upscale appearance, roomy packaging, and strong safety tech.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $25,195 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $27,370 CAD average.
- It was refined rather than reinvented, with a light refresh and new safety technology.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $29,948 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $27,370 CAD average.
- It gets value-boosting upgrades and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, safety, and upscale character, the 2023 is the sweet spot. If your priority is spending less, the 2022 is the smarter value play; if you want newer upgrades and can stretch your budget, the 2024 is worth a look.
