What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Kia Sportage?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the entry point and comes with cloth seats, while higher trims add more upscale cabin materials and more standard equipment. The X-Line Limited stands out for its premium safety and convenience features, but the base trim leaves you with the fewest comfort and tech extras.
• Powertrain: The gas Sportage uses a 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is described as adequate rather than quick, so you should test it to make sure the performance suits your driving style.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, lane-departure warning, and a backup camera. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit warning arrive on the X-Line, while blind-view monitor and highway driving assist are reserved for the X-Line Limited.
• Infotainment: The base LX gets an 8-inch screen with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. EX and higher trims use a 12.3-inch touchscreen, but the top interface keeps CarPlay and Android Auto wired. Wireless charging is standard above the LX.
• Fuel efficiency: The gas model is rated at 9.3 L/100 km city, 7.4 L/100 km highway, and 8.4 L/100 km combined with FWD, or 10.4 L/100 km city, 8.5 L/100 km highway, and 9.5 L/100 km combined with AWD.

Which 2023 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2023 Kia Sportage is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, X-Line, EX, EX Premium, and X-Line Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the least expensive way in, and it gives you the core Sportage design plus wireless smartphone integration on the smaller screen. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the richer cabin and safety upgrades found higher up.
• X-Line: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds AWD as standard, more rugged styling, and extra safety tech such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. It is the trim to focus on if you want the strongest balance of price, equipment, and all-weather confidence.
• EX: This trim adds the larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone full automatic climate control, and more standard convenience features. It suits you if cabin tech matters more than the X-Line’s rugged look.
• EX Premium: This trim builds on the EX with more upscale equipment and is a good fit if you want a more polished daily driver without jumping to the top model.
• X-Line Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, with the blind-view monitor, highway driving assist, front and rear parking sensors, projection LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a surround-view camera, and the Harman Kardon audio system. It is the one to choose if you want the most advanced safety and convenience package.

The X-Line Limited is the only trim with the blind-view monitor and highway driving assist, so safety-focused shoppers should pay close attention to that trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Kia Sportage?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 634 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.33% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,335 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Kia Sportage's resale value?

The current average of $27,366 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,518 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Sportage has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the vehicle is especially well equipped or lightly used. The softer market also means resale values may stay under pressure if inventory remains healthy and shoppers keep finding attractive alternatives.

For you as an owner, the upside is that strong demand for a well-liked, feature-rich compact SUV can help support pricing over time. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to move than plain, high-mileage ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Kia Sportage safe?

The 2023 Kia Sportage has not yet been crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, lane-departure warning, and a backup camera. Moving up to the X-Line adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit warning, while the X-Line Limited adds blind-view monitor, highway driving assist, front and rear parking sensors, projection LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and a surround-view camera.

The main caveat is that the most useful advanced safety features are not spread evenly across the line-up, so you will want to check trim carefully if those systems matter to you.

Should I buy a 2023 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.33% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 brings a full redesign, standout styling, and a strong technology package.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,928 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $27,366 CAD average.
• It offers a stylish, sophisticated, safe compact SUV with an available turbocharged engine.

The bottom line: Choose the 2023 if you want the redesigned Sportage’s styling, tech, and broader appeal. If your priority is saving money and you want a proven earlier version with stronger performance, the 2022 is the smarter value play.
