Is the 2022 Volvo XC40 a good car?

The 2022 Volvo XC40 earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

It is a compact luxury SUV with standard all-wheel drive, and the all-electric packaging gives you a straightforward premium EV experience rather than a heavily revised model year. The expert review also points to its practical range figure and its appeal as a clean, familiar Volvo take on the subcompact crossover format.

41.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which is a healthy signal for shoppers.

Is the 2022 Volvo XC40 reliable?

The 2022 Volvo XC40 is presented as a straightforward electric Volvo experience, with no significant changes for the model year. Its standard AWD setup, mature platform, and established EV hardware point to a familiar ownership experience rather than a risky first-year design.

The expert review highlights regenerative braking, one-pedal driving, and a lower centre of gravity from the battery placement, all of which support stable day-to-day use. It also notes that the XC40 Recharge uses a 78-kilowatt-hour battery pack and dual electric motors, which are proven EV building blocks.

Volvo’s heat pump availability can help support climate control efficiency in colder weather. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is typical EV ownership exposure to battery, charging, and software-related concerns, so a careful inspection and service history review still matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volvo XC40?

• Powertrain: You get a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack with two permanent magnet electric motors and standard AWD. The XC40 Recharge is rated at 2.8 Le/100 km combined, with 2.6 city and 3.0 highway.
• Safety package: Volvo’s standard safety equipment includes collision warning and collision avoidance, blind-spot information system with cross-traffic alert and autobrake, full LED active bending lights, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, oncoming lane mitigation, connected safety, a specially optimised reinforced front safety structure, and a high-strength protective cage for the high-voltage battery.
• Infotainment: You get a 9.3-inch centre-stack touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, Android Automotive, built-in Google Maps, Google Assistant, Google Play, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and over-the-air updates.

Which 2022 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volvo XC40 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry trim, and it gives you the XC40 Recharge experience at the lowest starting point. It makes the most sense if you want the electric Volvo basics and plan to keep the purchase focused on value.
• Plus: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it sits between the entry trim and the top model without pushing as far up the price ladder.
• Ultimate: Choose this if you want the most fully equipped version and are willing to pay for the extra content.

Volvo’s safety equipment is extensive across the range, so you are not giving up the core safety story by staying lower in the lineup.

Should I buy a 2022 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

Choose the 2022 if:

• 41.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.63% compared with last year.
• It keeps the all-electric XC40 formula straightforward, with no major changes for the year.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $28,595 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $31,502 CAD average.
• It introduced the XC40 Recharge and brought major electrification to the nameplate.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $32,976 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $31,502 CAD average.
• It adds refreshed styling, mild-hybrid powertrains, and updated infotainment.

The bottom line: If you want the simplest path into this model year, the 2022 is the one to target. If price matters most, the 2021 is the value play; if you want newer updates and broader powertrain choice, look to 2023.
