Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Volkswagen also backs it with a four-year/80,000-kilometre new-vehicle limited warranty and a five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some owners have raised concerns about infotainment customisation and build quality after accidents.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Trendline uses a simpler MIB2 infotainment setup with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth, while higher trims add more upscale cabin materials, keyless entry with push-button start, remote start, and available panoramic sunroof equipment.
• Powertrain: Every 2022 Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and 4Motion all-wheel drive. It can feel a little delayed off the line because of turbo lag.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can slow the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
• Infotainment: Most versions get an 8-inch touchscreen with MIB3, standard Car-Net connected services, standard App-Connect smartphone mirroring, and SiriusXM. The Highline R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, redesigned navigation, and a nine-speaker Fender audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says R-Line grades will do no better than 9.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test drive returned 9.5 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition, and Highline R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the entry point, but it uses the simpler MIB2 infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth, so it makes the most sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Tiguan lineup.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds keyless entry with push-button start and remote start, giving you a more complete everyday ownership experience.
• Comfortline R-Line Black Edition: Choose this if you want the sportier R-Line look and the blacked-out appearance treatment without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Highline R-Line: This is the most upscale choice, with richer cabin materials, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, redesigned navigation, the Fender premium audio system, and standard Park Assist.

Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 603 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.15% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,214 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $25,254 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,417 CAD.

That price decline suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilises. If you buy near the current average, you may avoid some of the steepest early value loss. The year-round low also gives you a useful benchmark for judging whether a used listing is priced aggressively enough to leave room for later resale.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection, is standard, as is Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Travel Assist adds adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can bring the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

One caveat is that Travel Assist can be awkward to activate because of the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls, so you should confirm it is engaged before relying on it.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 adds new safety technology and keeps the Tiguan’s familiar, comfort-focused formula intact.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,198 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $25,254 CAD average.
• It is larger inside and more upscale in appearance.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and updated safety tech. If you are willing to spend more for a roomier, more upscale-feeling Tiguan, the 2023 is the better alternative.

How does the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan compare to the 2022 Mazda CX-5?

The Tiguan gives you more used-market inventory and a lower average price, while the CX-5 carries a slightly higher average used price but also a stronger deal share.
