What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Trendline uses a simpler infotainment setup than the higher trims, while the Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition, and Highline R-Line add more upscale equipment and features. The R-Line models bring a sportier look, and the Highline R-Line adds the richest cabin presentation.
• Powertrain: Every 2022 Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic and 4Motion all-wheel drive. It is tuned more for everyday usability than strong acceleration, and the engine can feel a bit delayed off the line.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can slow the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
• Infotainment: The base Trendline uses MIB2 with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth. Most other trims get MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Car-Net connected services, standard App-Connect smartphone mirroring, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Highline R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, a redesigned navigation system, and a nine-speaker Fender premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says R-Line grades will do no better than 9.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test drive returned 9.5 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition, and Highline R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Tiguan’s core strengths without the extra cost of the higher trims. It is the trim to consider if you want the most affordable way into the model and can live with the simpler MIB2 infotainment setup.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds key convenience features, including keyless entry with push-button start and remote start. It strikes the best balance between price and everyday equipment.
• Comfortline R-Line Black Edition: Choose this if you want the sportier R-Line appearance and a more distinctive look without jumping all the way to the top trim. It is mainly about style and presence.
• Highline R-Line: This is the most upscale version, with the richer cabin, perforated and piped leather upholstery, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, redesigned navigation, and the Fender premium audio system. It also includes Park Assist.

Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available safety upgrades, and Park Assist is standard on Highline R-Line.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 596 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.71% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,227 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $25,308 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,674 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favourable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale expectations should be grounded in the current market rather than last year’s higher pricing.

Because the Tiguan still has broad appeal as a practical compact SUV, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than less popular alternatives. Strong condition, desirable equipment, and clean history will matter more when you eventually sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection, is standard. Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, is available, and Emergency Assist can bring the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

One caveat is that Travel Assist can be awkward to engage because of the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls, so you should confirm it is active before relying on it.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.71% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds new safety technology and keeps the Tiguan’s familiar, comfort-focused formula.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,226 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $25,308 CAD average.
• It is larger inside and offers a third row.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the strongest value and a well-equipped, familiar Tiguan with updated safety tech. If you need more interior space and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is worth a look; otherwise, the 2022 is the smarter buy for price-sensitive shoppers.
