What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Trendline uses a simpler infotainment setup than the higher trims, while the Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition, and Highline R-Line add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The R-Line models bring a sportier look, and the Highline R-Line adds the richest cabin presentation.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and 4Motion all-wheel drive. The engine can feel a bit delayed off the line, so test low-speed response carefully.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can slow the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
• Infotainment: The base Trendline uses MIB2 with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth, while most versions get MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, Car-Net connected services, App-Connect smartphone mirroring, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Highline R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display and a redesigned navigation system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says R-Line grades will do no better than 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and testing returned 9.5 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Comfortline R-Line Black Edition, and Highline R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the entry point, but it uses the simpler MIB2 infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen instead of the more advanced MIB3 setup found higher up. It makes sense if you want the Tiguan’s core practicality and standard all-wheel drive at the lowest price.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds keyless entry with push-button start and remote start, while moving you into the more modern equipment set. If you want the sweet spot between price and features, this is the trim to target.
• Comfortline R-Line Black Edition: Choose this if you want the sportier appearance package and a more distinctive look without jumping all the way to the top trim. It is the style-focused middle ground.
• Highline R-Line: This is the most luxurious version, with perforated and piped leather upholstery, ambient lighting with 30 colour choices, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, the Fender premium audio system, and standard Park Assist. It suits you best if you want the most upscale Tiguan experience.

Front Assist and Side Assist are standard across the line, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available safety upgrades.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 590 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.15% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,212 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $25,258 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,420 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right entry point. If you purchase near the current average or below, you may have less downside left than someone who bought when prices were higher.

The market trend also shows that buyers are still willing to consider this model year, especially when the listing is well priced and equipped. That matters because a vehicle with steady demand is usually easier to resell later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, are standard. Travel Assist adds adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can bring the SUV to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

One caveat is that Travel Assist can be awkward to activate because of the touch-sensing steering wheel controls, so you should confirm it is engaged before relying on it.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds new safety technology while keeping the Tiguan’s familiar, practical formula.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $27,238 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $25,258 CAD average.
• It is larger inside and offers a third-row seat.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and updated safety tech. If you need more interior space and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is the better alternative.
