I just bought a 2022 GTI S 6-speed manual. Incredible handling (bordering on telekinetic!), a super-responsive, efficient engine and a competent and well-sorted clutch and stick. Perfectly spaced-out gear ratios and a powerband that gladly handles stop & go, commuting, and spirited driving with aplomb. For everyone who is concerned about the new Mk VIII interior . . . . the GTI S still comes with a volume/power and tuner knobs on the dashboard! The base S is a lot of value for the money and has all the creature comforts expected for a sport hot hatch. Another benefit - it is tuned and requires REGULAR unleaded gas!

Performance on the car is sizeable compared to my prior MK7. The newer infotainment and menus have a learning curve to get used to in the absence of buttons/dials. So far, I am happy with my purchase and will continue to develop opinions further into ownership once I can tell more.

SE auto drives and handles great. Comfortable, quiet and seems like its built well. Price is absurd. Controls are too - no knobs and so hard to use without taking eyes off the road. Kept me from the purchase.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI earns 4.75/5 from owners and 8/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
It is positioned as a hot hatch that keeps everyday usability intact while sharpening the driving experience, and the overview frames it as a practical hatchback with a more aggressive edge. The expert summary also points to an updated engine, revised suspension, and a tech-forward interior, which supports its appeal if you want a compact car that feels more serious than a standard hatchback.
The market shows 32.9% good and great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview presents the GTI as a complete performance package, and the expert notes reinforce that with an updated engine and revised suspension that aim to improve the car’s overall character. The performance write-up also points to a modern turbocharged powertrain and a chassis setup designed to manage heat better and deliver strong torque low in the rev range, which supports the impression of a well-developed mechanical package.
The cost-effectiveness notes also suggest the GTI remains appealing for buyers who want sporty driving without moving into a much pricier performance car. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a more complex performance hatch can be costlier to keep in top shape than a simpler commuter car.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base GTIs get 17-inch alloy wheels and plaid cloth seats, while the Autobahn adds 18-inch wheels and the Performance trim moves to 19-inch wheels with Vienna leather upholstery. If you want the most complete feature set, the Performance trim is the one to target.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Front-wheel drive is the only drivetrain.
- Safety package: IQ.Drive includes Travel Assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear traffic alert. It is only available on automatic GTIs, while Park Distance Control is standard on all trims.
- Infotainment: The base trim uses an 8-inch touchscreen, while Autobahn and Performance trims get a 10-inch screen with navigation. All trims include a 10.25-inch digital driver display, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth connectivity.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel consumption at 9.3 L/100 km city, 7.0 L/100 km highway, and 8.3 combined with the automatic, or 9.8 L/100 km city, 6.9 highway, and 8.5 combined with the manual.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is offered in 3 trim levels: Base GTI, Autobahn, Performance.
Here's the short version:
- Base GTI: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the GTI’s core appeal: the turbocharged engine, manual or automatic transmission choice, plaid cloth seats, the 8-inch touchscreen, and the 10.25-inch digital driver display. It makes sense if you want the GTI experience without paying for extras.
- Autobahn: This trim adds 18-inch wheels and a 10-inch infotainment screen with navigation, making it the best-value choice if you want a more polished cabin and a stronger feature set without jumping to the top trim.
- Performance: This is the most fully equipped version, with 19-inch wheels, Vienna leather upholstery, the 10-inch screen with navigation, the 9-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, DCC adaptive damping, and Park Assist. It suits you best if you want the most complete GTI package.
IQ.Drive is only available on automatic GTIs, so manual shoppers should keep that safety-package limitation in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 79 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.65% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $28,867 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI's resale value?
The current average of $29,683 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,853 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about where the market has settled. If prices remain near the current average, resale values should be supported by the GTI’s strong enthusiast appeal and practical hatchback format. The fact that the model still attracts shoppers looking for a sporty daily driver should help keep demand steady over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI safe?
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI has not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive suite includes Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, along with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear traffic alert. Park Distance Control is standard on all trims, and Park Assist is available on the Performance trim.
One important caveat is that IQ.Drive is only available on automatic GTIs, so manual-transmission cars miss out on that driver-assistance package.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- With its updated engine, revised suspension, and tech-forward interior, this year looks especially well-rounded for buyers who want the latest Mk8 GTI formula.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of updated performance, modern tech, and everyday usability, the 2022 is the one to focus on. If your priority is stretching your budget, a nearby model year may be worth considering, but the 2022 stands out as the more complete and current-feeling choice.
