How much does the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI cost?

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

The overview frames it as a performance-focused hatchback that still keeps everyday usability in view, and the expert assessment backs that up with praise for its updated engine, revised suspension, and tech-forward interior. That makes it a strong fit if you want a hot hatch that feels current rather than purely nostalgic.

Good and great deals account for 26.6% of listings, so you still have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI reliable?

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview presents the GTI as a well-rounded package that balances performance with everyday usability, while the expert assessment highlights an updated engine and revised suspension that should help the car feel sorted in daily use. The performance notes also point to an engine design that warms up faster and manages heat better, which is a useful sign for durability-minded shoppers.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is that a performance hatchback can be more expensive to keep in top shape than a mainstream compact, so service history matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base GTIs get 17-inch alloy wheels and plaid cloth seats, while the Autobahn adds 18-inch wheels and the Performance trim moves to 19-inch wheels with Vienna leather upholstery. If you want the most complete cabin and chassis setup, the Performance trim is the one to focus on.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, plus either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Front-wheel drive is the only drivetrain.
• Safety package: IQ.Drive bundles Travel Assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear traffic alert. It is only available on automatic GTIs, while Park Distance Control is standard on all trims.
• Infotainment: The driver display measures 10.25 inches, the base touchscreen is 8 inches, and the Autobahn and Performance trims get a 10-inch screen with navigation. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and Car-Net remote access are included.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates 9.3 L/100 km city, 7.0 L/100 km highway, and 8.3 L/100 km combined with the automatic, or 9.8 L/100 km city, 6.9 L/100 km highway, and 8.5 L/100 km combined with the manual.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is offered in 3 trim levels: Base GTI, Autobahn, Performance.

Here's the short version:

• Base GTI: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core GTI formula with the 241-horsepower turbo engine, the digital driver display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and standard Park Distance Control. It makes sense if you want the driving experience first and foremost.
• Autobahn: This trim adds the 10-inch touchscreen with navigation and 18-inch wheels, which makes it the best-value choice for many shoppers because it brings a more polished cabin without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• Performance: This is the most fully equipped version, with 19-inch wheels, Vienna leather upholstery, the 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, DCC adaptive damping, and available Park Assist. It suits you best if you want the most complete GTI experience.

IQ.Drive is only available on automatic GTIs, so manual buyers should factor that into their trim decision.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 79 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.63% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,869 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI's resale value?

The current average of $29,777 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,591 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favourable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. Even so, the GTI’s strong performance reputation and broad appeal should help it remain desirable among shoppers looking for a sporty hatchback.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI has not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive suite includes Travel Assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear traffic alert. Park Distance Control is standard on all trims, and Park Assist is available on the Performance trim.

One important caveat is that IQ.Drive is only available on automatic GTIs, so manual-transmission cars miss out on that driver-assistance package.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• With its updated engine, revised suspension, and tech-forward interior, it looks ready to do battle with the Hyundai Veloster N as well as the Honda Civic Si and Subaru WRX.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of performance, modern tech, and everyday usability, the 2022 GTI is the right year to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, you can still shop confidently, but the best move is to focus on well-priced examples with the equipment you want rather than waiting for a dramatic bargain.
