CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 18 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,999 CAD, 27.8% of 2022 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Forester 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact crossover SUV that was updated with fresh design details, an upgraded package of EyeSight driving assistance technologies, and improved utility features. Those changes help it remain appealing as an all-around choice, especially for buyers who value safety technology and everyday practicality.
Its biggest distinction is the new-for-2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness, which is aimed at taking the Forester farther off-road. Subaru says it adds extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty, giving the model a more rugged character than the standard Forester. That makes the 2022 Forester especially interesting for shoppers who want a compact SUV with a tougher, more adventurous edge.
Owner feedback broadly supports that appeal, with praise for the comfortable ride, spacious interior, safety features, and all-wheel-drive capability. At the same time, some reviewers pointed to outdated styling, limited storage space, and a desire for more powerful performance, so the Forester’s strengths are balanced by a few familiar compromises.

I am not an electronic/computer geek and was a bit concerned about all the new technology. Learning to take advantage of all the Subaru Forester has to offer is actually easier than I thought it would be and so appreciated in daily driving. Roomy four door and covered cargo area, keyless entry is handy when my hands are full, great rear vision camera, auto heat/cooling settings and so many great features...wow! A few more cubbies would be my choice of added features. I was driving a 2016 Ford Escape prior to the Forester and liked the trays inside the front doors, the extra little shelf in the console, an extra shelf in the glove box, a couple small change holders by the gear shift and a slightly deeper shelf mid dashboard on top and by the shifter. Overall...I do enjoy the Subaru and the AWD feature that I havent had on any of my other vehicles. In snowy weather I have found it to be quite helpful.

How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,150 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $27,961 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $31,757 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,757 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.36% |
Prices have softened 11.36% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 192 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, safety features, and all-wheel-drive capability. That lines up well with the Forester’s role as an all-around compact crossover SUV that prioritizes everyday practicality and safety technology. It also makes sense if you want a useful, weather-ready SUV rather than something flashy or performance-focused.
With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still a decent amount of market value to be found.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its durability, all-wheel-drive capability, and ability to serve as an excellent all-around SUV. The expert review also reinforces that impression by describing it as simple and easy to drive, safe and secure, and known for holding its value over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic dependability and more about whether the Forester’s modest power and practical focus will suit your needs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The Wilderness stands apart with extra clearance, more body cladding, and a dirt-friendly interior, but its rugged look and off-road focus may not suit everyone.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It is efficient and capable for daily use, but it is not especially quick, and the review notes that more power would be welcome.
- Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also part of the safety equipment, while Limited and Premier trims add DriverFocus.
- Infotainment: Base trims use a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Starlink connected services. Touring and higher trims get an 8-inch screen, with navigation and Harman Kardon audio available.
- Fuel efficiency: According to Natural Resources Canada, the Wilderness should consume 9.0 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 9.1 L/100 km.
Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 7 trim levels: base, Convenience, Touring, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest cost. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight 4.0, and the 6.5-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring, so it covers the essentials well.
- Convenience: This trim makes sense if you want a step up from the base model without chasing luxury features. It should appeal to buyers who want a practical daily driver with a little more equipment.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim if you want the more polished infotainment setup, because it brings the 8-inch screen and opens the door to navigation and premium audio.
- Sport: Choose this if you want a slightly more expressive version of the Forester without moving into the Wilderness’s rugged focus.
- Wilderness: This is the one to buy if you want the most off-road-ready Forester. It adds extra ground clearance, all-terrain tires, a skid plate, a full-size spare, and a 180-degree forward-view camera.
- Limited: This trim is a strong pick if you want more comfort and the added DriverFocus system.
- Premier: This is the most upscale choice, and it also includes DriverFocus.
EyeSight 4.0 is standard, while DriverFocus is reserved for Limited and Premier trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
The market looks moderately favourable if you are a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 192 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.36% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $27,961 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $28,150 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,757 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Forester has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may not see the same pricing strength that was available a year ago.
Even so, the Forester’s practical reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support steady interest. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2022 Subaru Forester earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, where it gets a four-star assessment.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking.
A key caveat is that the Wilderness trim may require re-testing because of its modified height.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a new Wilderness trim and upgraded EyeSight 4.0 safety tech.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $30,040 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,150 CAD average.
- It adds next-generation EyeSight and an improved standard infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2022 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and meaningful safety upgrades. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model year and slightly updated tech, the 2023 is the better secondary path.
