Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a value-focused compact sedan that pairs stylish exterior design with a roomy cabin and excellent fuel economy. It also brings impressive standard safety features and driver-assistance technology, along with top-notch product quality and an industry-leading warranty, all at a bargain price. Those strengths make it especially appealing to buyers who want a well-equipped small sedan without paying a premium.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The base engine is described as underwhelming, and the car is also noted for uncomfortable seats and a noisy demeanour. This is a great car, with an excellent warranty and packed with features. It is also great on gas and we couldnt be happier with this car. It is used as a commuter car and so far we have no complaints. It gives a great ride and the lane assist feature is something!! Buy it!!

Prices have softened 12.30% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 611 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.57/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its excellent value, fuel efficiency, safety features, and stylish design. The expert review also points to a roomy cabin and strong standard equipment, which fits a compact sedan aimed at buyers who want a lot for the money. The main trade-offs are an underwhelming base engine, uncomfortable seats, and a noisy demeanour.
That makes it a strong fit if you want a well-equipped small sedan with broad appeal rather than a luxury badge or sporty character. With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.57/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights value, fuel efficiency, safety features, and a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with many drivers describing the car as a smart long-term choice. The expert review also supports that impression by pointing to top-notch product quality and an industry-leading warranty.
Hyundai’s warranty coverage adds peace of mind for used buyers, but you should still check service history carefully because long-term ownership risk always rises once factory coverage ages out.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Essential is the most basic version, while Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The base trim misses some of the convenience and safety content that appears on higher grades, so you should compare feature lists carefully.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, while the N Line uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft. The standard engine is efficient but can feel short on power, while the N Line is the enthusiast choice.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Warning are not available on Essential, but they are standard on other grades.
- Infotainment: The base system uses an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, HD Radio, a rearview camera, four speakers, and dual USB ports. Ultimate and N Line add a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system, but CarPlay and Android Auto are wired on those trims.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption ranges from 6.7 L/100 km for the 2.0-litre engine to 7.6 L/100 km for the N Line, while the hybrid returns 4.4 L/100 km combined.
Which 2022 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Ultimate, and N Line.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and still want wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rearview camera, and strong standard safety basics. It makes sense if you care most about price and efficiency.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more convenience and safety content without jumping all the way to the pricier upper trims. It is the sweet spot if you want a better-equipped daily driver.
- Ultimate: Choose this if you want the more premium tech experience, including the larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, and Bose audio.
- N Line: Pick this if you want the sportiest version, with the turbocharged engine, sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and a more engaging drive.
The safety package is strongest on trims above Essential, where blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Warning become standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping rather than impulse buying.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 611 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.30% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,072 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $19,073 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,748 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can put pressure on future resale values if you plan to sell soon. On the other hand, a lower entry price can help keep the car attractive to used shoppers who want value and equipment without stretching their budget. If demand stays steady, well-kept examples should still hold appeal because the Elantra’s value proposition remains strong.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra earns five-star ratings for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance. The IIHS gave it top Good ratings in all six of its individual crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s standard safety suite includes automatic emergency braking across the board, plus forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, lane-centring assistance, automatic high beams, and driver attention alert. Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Warning are standard on all but the Essential trim.
One caveat is that lower-level trims with halogen headlights received a Marginal IIHS headlight rating, while trims with LED headlights were rated Good.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value, safety, and tech with a roomy cabin and excellent fuel economy.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,950 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,073 CAD average.
- It offers a redesigned compact sedan with style, space, and broad appeal.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $20,896 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $19,073 CAD average.
- It broadens the lineup with multiple personalities, including efficient hybrid and sporty options.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-round pick if you want a value-rich Elantra with strong safety and tech. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the cheaper route; if you want more lineup breadth, the 2023 is worth a look.
