CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Honda HR-V
Summary

Why it stands out
The 2022 Honda HR-V stands out as a practical subcompact SUV that blends a higher driving position with the easygoing feel of a smaller car. It is part of the first-generation HR-V sold in North America, which first appeared in 2016, and it helped popularise the segment by combining SUV versatility with a compact footprint. Its appeal is rooted in everyday usefulness: Honda’s Magic Seat system allows the rear seats to fold in multiple ways for different seating and cargo needs, and the cargo area offers between 1,583 and 1,665 litres of space. That flexibility, along with Honda’s strong reputation for reliability, makes it a sensible choice for drivers who want something efficient, practical, and easy to live with.
For the 2022 model year, the HR-V uses a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with 141 hp and a CVT automatic transmission that is tuned more for fuel economy than performance. Natural Resources Canada lists combined fuel consumption between 7.6 and 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres, depending on model year and equipment. The trade-off is that acceleration is not its strong suit, and early infotainment systems were criticised for being slow and unresponsive, though later models improved that area. Buyers also benefit from the 2019 refresh, which brought revised body panels, upgraded LED headlights, a new infotainment system with physical buttons and a volume knob, and Honda Sensing as standard. Overall, the 2022 HR-V is distinctive because it prioritises space, versatility, and value over outright speed or flash.

The 2022, Honda HR-V, Sport AWD is a great value. It has a stylish look inside and out. Lots of head and leg room. The seats are comfortable and great for taking that long road trip or commute to work. I love the sound system features. All around a fun car to drive, no matter where youre going.

Great size, good value and great price for the age and mileage of the car. The only things missing are a CD player (sad reality of today’s new cars), automatic lift gate, and rear passenger center arm rest. All minor things, but features I personally would like.

How much does the 2022 Honda HR-V cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,257 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $23,542 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $27,319 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,941 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.96% |
Prices have softened 9.96% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 180 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Honda HR-V a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Honda HR-V earns a 4.73/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, great value, and fun driving experience, while also appreciating comfortable seating and a solid sound system. It fits especially well if you want a practical subcompact SUV with a higher driving position and flexible everyday usability. With 27.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a reliable, dependable ownership experience, with the HR-V often described as a trouble-free choice that people can count on over the long term. That kind of reputation matters if you want a used SUV that should be easier to live with day to day. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about accepting modest performance and older-feeling tech.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Honda HR-V?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 180 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.96% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,542 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $24,257 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,941 CAD.
That price movement suggests the HR-V has become a bit more accessible for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price more competitively. If you buy at the right number now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The model’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $27,668 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,257 CAD average.
- It brings a full redesign with a more modern look and a stronger feature set.
The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the better value and are comfortable with its older-generation design. If you want a more modern HR-V and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is the better upgrade path; if price matters most, the 2022 is the smarter buy.
