CarGurus Analysis: 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD

Summary
With 117 currently listed for sale and an average price of $67,900 CAD, 19.7% of 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD 4.3 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD stands out as a heavy-duty pickup that blends serious work capability with a more polished feel than many trucks in its class. It sits in the fifth generation, which debuted as a 2020 model, and this version brought a larger footprint, revised styling, and meaningful gains in maximum towing capacity. GMC also offers it in a wide range of cab, bed, and rear-axle configurations, so buyers can tailor it closely to work needs.
Power comes from either a 6.6-litre V8 with 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque or a 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 with 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Properly equipped, it can haul as much as 3,375 kilograms and tow up to 16,100 kilograms, which puts its capability squarely among the strongest in the segment. The trim walk also helps broaden its appeal, from a basic work-focused model with a seven-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to more upscale versions with leather, larger screens, and advanced towing technology.
That breadth is one of the Sierra 3500HD’s biggest strengths, but it is not without trade-offs. The lineup includes luxury-oriented trims and off-road-focused equipment, yet the truck can be unwieldy in parking lots, and top trims can be prohibitively expensive. Even so, for buyers who want a heavy-duty truck that can work hard while offering more refinement and technology than a bare-bones hauler, the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD is a compelling choice.

Lots of features that will help with a fifth wheel. All vehicles seem to be overpriced but this seemed to fall in line with others.

NOT A GOOD BUY FOR THE MONEY! Simply put, the GMC Sierra is overpriced and under equipped. I just sold my 2019 F250 and that was a superior truck in very sense of the word compared to the GMC Sierra 3500HD but that doesnt stop GMC from overpricing this vehicle. Its sad when a work truck costs $85,000 and has sub-standard equipment. When will the truck industry reprice to lower affordable pricing? Its all about value for the dollar spent and ALL truck markets are nuts. Keep your old vehicles and push this market back by voting with your dollars.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD a good car?
Generally — the 4.3/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for a truck that blends serious work capability with a more polished feel than many trucks in its class. The 2022 Sierra 3500HD also gives you a wide range of cab, bed, and rear-axle configurations, so you can tailor it closely to work needs. Its broad trim walk helps too, since you can shop from a basic work-focused model to more upscale versions with leather, larger screens, and advanced towing technology. The market shows 22.1% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Sierra 3500HD’s appeal comes from its combination of heavy-duty capability and a more refined feel than many trucks in its class. That said, its size and complexity mean you should pay close attention to maintenance history, configuration, and how hard it was used before you buy. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a truck that was worked hard without the upkeep to match.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 22.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 122 listings available.

If you find a listing below $65,709 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?
The current average of $67,854 CAD sits slightly below last year's $73,536 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale will depend heavily on how well the truck holds demand after purchase. Because this model year combines strong capability with a more polished feel, it should remain appealing to buyers who want a heavy-duty truck that can work hard and still feel well equipped. If you keep mileage, condition, and service records in good shape, you should be better positioned when it comes time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 22.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.73% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2022 is a strong choice if you want heavy-duty capability, a broad configuration range, and a more refined feel than many trucks in this class. If your priority is stretching your budget, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of price, condition, and equipment.
How does the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD compare to the 2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty?
| Spec | 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD | 2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty |
|---|---|---|
| Average used price | $67,854 CAD | $63,172 CAD |
| Listings available | 122 | 213 |
| Good & great deal share | 22.1% | 32.9% |
The GMC costs more on average, while the Ford offers more listings and a higher share of good and great deals. If you want the broader shopping pool and more discount opportunities, the Ford has the edge; if you prefer the Sierra’s more polished feel and are comfortable paying a bit more, the GMC remains a compelling option.
