Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the car’s sporty performance, great handling, and fuel efficiency as reasons they keep enjoying it over time. The expert drive notes also describe the drivetrain and transmission as impressively composed, which supports the sense that the car is built to be counted on.

BMW also includes a maintenance perk in the ownership experience: the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

That said, used buyers should still budget carefully, because some owners report persistent oil leak issues and high maintenance costs over the long term.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition. The M340i stands out for its M Performance exterior treatment, Shadowline trim, blue brake calipers, and 19-inch wheels, while the test car’s upscale cabin materials and available packages show how much the higher trims can add. The base setup is more restrained, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want a richer look and feel.
• Powertrain: The 330i xDrive sedan and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid technology with 32 kilometres of estimated electric driving range. The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, and it is the performance choice if you want the strongest acceleration and sharpest handling.
• Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop and place an SOS call. Some features are optional, so check whether a used example has the driver-assistance equipment you want.
• Infotainment: Digital Cockpit Professional brings a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation. Every 3 Series has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system, while Connected Package Pro adds BMW Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant. Wireless smartphone integration is not called out here, so verify the exact equipment on the car you are considering.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 9.4 L/100 km on the evaluation route, versus an official combined rating of 9.2 L/100 km.

Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 5 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience with the least complexity. It gives you the core BMW sedan formula, and it makes the most sense if you value the badge and driving feel over extra performance hardware.
• 330e: This is the best-value choice if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and the ability to qualify for incentives. It suits you if your driving includes shorter daily trips and you want a more efficiency-focused version of the 3 Series.
• M340i: This is the sweet spot for most shoppers who want the strongest blend of speed, handling, and everyday usability. It adds the turbocharged inline-six, M Sport hardware, and the most compelling performance character without jumping all the way to the M3.
• M3: Choose this if you want the full high-performance experience and are willing to pay for it. It is the more serious performance model in the lineup.
• M3 Competition: This is the top performance trim for buyers who want the most aggressive version of the 3 Series family.

The safety package is centred on Active Guard, with additional driver-assistance features available on some trims and packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards patience and comparison shopping.

• Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 175 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.66% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,499 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $35,525 CAD sits slightly below last year's $42,124 CAD.

That price decline suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may face more competition when they go to list their car. If you buy at today's lower average, you may have less room for appreciation later unless the car is especially well equipped or exceptionally maintained.

The good news is that strong enthusiast appeal can help support demand. A model with the right trim, condition, and service history should still attract shoppers who want a premium sports sedan with a strong reputation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including for rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Active Guard is the standard safety suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can detect an unresponsive driver, bring the car to a safe stop, and place an SOS call.

One important caveat is that the IIHS Top Safety Pick result applies only to models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight, so you should confirm headlight equipment on any used example you are considering.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It remains essentially unchanged from 2019, with only minor equipment updates this year.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $40,591 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $35,525 CAD average.
• It adds a mid-cycle refresh with sleeker styling and more technology.

The bottom line: the 2022 is the better value if you want the classic 3 Series formula at a lower price, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the refreshed look and newer tech and are willing to pay more for it.
