What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE, Hybrid XSE, and Hybrid Limited each sit at different equipment levels, and the test vehicle’s Limited trim shows how much nicer the upper end can feel. The review also notes that the base experience can feel sparse by comparison, especially if you want more upscale touches.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder gas engine paired with front and rear electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack, with standard AWD from the rear electric motor. The hybrid system delivers 219 horsepower and feels lively thanks to instant electric-motor torque.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The review also notes that the adaptive front headlights on the Limited trim get the best IIHS result.
• Infotainment: You can find either a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, and both support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger screen adds SiriusXM satellite radio, Remote Connect, Safety Connect, and Service Connect, while the test vehicle’s top system included an 11-speaker JBL premium audio setup with dynamic navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the RAV4 Hybrid uses 6.0 L/100 km in combined driving, and the review’s test loop returned 5.9 L/100 km. Toyota also says the hybrid uses about 2.4 L/100 km less fuel than the standard AWD version.

Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE, Hybrid XSE, and Hybrid Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Hybrid LE: This is the entry point if you want the hybrid system and standard safety tech without stretching your budget. It makes the most sense if you care most about efficiency and core practicality.
• Hybrid XLE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience while staying below the top trims. If you want a balanced mix of equipment and price, this is the one to focus on first.
• Hybrid XSE: Choose this if you want a firmer, sport-tuned feel and a more distinctive personality. The review notes that it gets a sport-tuned suspension, though it still rides on the same tires as the rest of the lineup.
• Hybrid Limited: This is the most upscale version, and the test vehicle shows it can feel richly equipped. It suits you best if you want the most premium presentation and are willing to pay for it.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, but the review notes that the adaptive front headlights on the Limited trim get the top IIHS result.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent opportunities.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 204 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.47% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $33,967 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?

The current average of $33,967 CAD sits slightly below last year's $35,932 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favourable for buyers, which can put some pressure on future resale values if supply stays healthy. For a seller, that means you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if similar listings are already sitting in the market. On the other hand, the model’s strong reputation for efficiency, safety, and reliability should help support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.82/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid earns top marks in IIHS assessments except for its headlights, and it earns an overall five-star rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 comes standard and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-tracing assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard.

The main caveat is that the IIHS does not give the headlights top marks across the board; only the adaptive front headlights on the Limited trim get a top Good review.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.47% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.82/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights that it pays for itself in a little more than three years, which makes this year especially compelling if efficiency and long-term value matter to you.

The bottom line: The 2021 is a strong pick if you want the RAV4 Hybrid formula at a softer price than last year and you value the model’s mix of efficiency, safety, and owner satisfaction. If you’re especially price-sensitive, it makes sense to shop carefully for a well-priced listing rather than rushing into the first one you see.
