Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?

BMW also gives the X5 a broad standard equipment set, and the cabin’s premium materials and strong technology roster support the impression of a well-built vehicle. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is cost: the X5 can be expensive to buy, and added features can push the price up quickly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Standard xLine models bring matte aluminium grilles, satin-aluminium exterior accents, and an upscale appearance, while M Sport models add body-colour trim, matte aluminium kidney grille bars, and a more aggressive cabin with an M sports steering wheel, M-specific pedals, a driver’s footrest, seat piping, and model-exclusive interior trim strips.
• Powertrain: The X5 lineup includes a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, a 600 hp twin-turbo V8 in the X5 M, and the xDrive45e plug-in hybrid with 389 hp, 443 lb-ft of torque, and a 24-kWh battery.
• Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, but the system’s lane-keeping and traffic response behaviour deserves careful evaluation.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, five USB ports, voice recognition, automatic climate control, proximity key, panoramic sunroof, and remote start. Available upgrades include a head-up display, quad-zone automatic climate control, a wireless smartphone charger, ventilated and massaging seats, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and premium audio systems.
• Fuel efficiency: The X5 xDrive gets 10.4 L/100 km combined, the X5 xDrive45e gets 11.5 L/100 km combined on gasoline and 4.7 Le/100 km when using electricity and gas, the X5 M50i gets 12.7 L/100 km combined, and the X5 M gets 15.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the entry-level model in Canada and the best-value starting point if you want the core X5 experience with standard AWD, the 3.0-litre inline six, and the full base technology and safety package without stepping into the pricier performance models.
• xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid version with 50 kilometres of all-electric range, seamless power delivery, and the efficiency advantage of the electrified drivetrain.
• M50i: This trim is for you if you want a big jump in straight-line performance from the twin-turbo V8 and are willing to accept higher fuel use and a much higher purchase price.
• M: Pick this only if you want the most powerful X5 in the lineup, with 600 hp and even more in Competition form, and you’re shopping for maximum performance rather than value.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the Driving Assistance Professional Package should be tested carefully because its lane-keeping and traffic response behaviour can be inconsistent.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully before committing.

• Deal availability: 38.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 162 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.97% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $43,943 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $43,943 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,679 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s average, you’re starting from a lower entry point than last year’s shoppers, which can help cushion depreciation over your ownership period.

The X5’s broad appeal should still support demand, especially because shoppers value its comfort, technology, and premium feel. Strong owner satisfaction also helps keep interest steady when it’s time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?

The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera.

There is a caveat to keep in mind: the available Driving Assistance Professional Package did not consistently react well in testing, and lane-keeping performance could become unreliable in sunshine or light rain. That means you should not assume the most advanced driver-assistance features will work flawlessly in every condition.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.97% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• For 2021, the SUV’s second-generation plug-in hybrid variant joins the family, broadening the lineup with an electrified option.

The bottom line: The 2021 X5 is a strong pick if you want the broadest mix of powertrains in this generation, especially if the plug-in hybrid appeals to you. If you’re price-sensitive, the softer market and decent deal availability make this a sensible year to shop, but you should still compare trims carefully because options can push the price up quickly.
