Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?

The expert drive notes also support that sense of durability by highlighting the SUV’s solid engineering and the way its cabin and ride quality hold up in daily use. BMW’s maintenance coverage can also help soften early ownership costs when applicable.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that premium features and complex systems can make repairs and upkeep more expensive if the vehicle has been poorly maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Standard xLine models use matte aluminium grilles and satin-aluminium exterior accents, while M Sport models add body-colour trim, high-gloss black accents, and a more aggressive cabin with an M sports steering wheel, M-specific pedals, a driver’s footrest, seat piping, and model-exclusive interior trim strips.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine in the xDrive40i, a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 in the M50i, a 600 hp twin-turbo V8 in the X5 M, and a plug-in hybrid xDrive45e with a 24-kWh battery and up to 50 km of all-electric range.
• Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, but the lane-keeping system can struggle in sunshine and light rain.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, five USB ports, and remote start.
• Fuel efficiency: The X5 xDrive is rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined, the xDrive45e at 11.5 L/100 km combined on gasoline and 4.7 Le/100 km when using electricity and gas, the M50i at 12.7 L/100 km combined, and the X5 M at 15.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, and X5 M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the best-value starting point if you want the core X5 experience, including standard AWD, the 3.0-litre inline six, and the full suite of standard tech and safety features without stepping into the pricier performance models.
• xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup, the 24-kWh battery, and the ability to drive up to 50 km on electricity alone, while still keeping the X5’s luxury-SUV character.
• M50i: This trim is for you if you want a much stronger V8-powered version and are willing to pay more for the added performance.
• X5 M: This is the top performance choice, with the most power in the lineup and the highest price tag.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the available Driving Assistance Professional Package has some real-world limitations in lane keeping and traffic response.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 38.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 163 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.20% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $43,644 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $43,681 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,913 CAD.

That price movement suggests the X5 has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer market than owners saw a year ago. If you buy at today’s lower average, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. Strong demand for well-equipped luxury SUVs can still support resale, especially if the vehicle has been maintained carefully and presents well.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?

The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, but testing found that the lane-keeping system could struggle in sunshine and light rain, which is a meaningful caveat if you plan to rely on driver assistance often.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.20% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• For 2021, the lineup adds the second-generation plug-in hybrid variant, broadening your powertrain choices.

The bottom line: The 2021 BMW X5 makes sense if you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with a broader powertrain mix and a softer used-market price than last year. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to focus on the lower end of the range and compare carefully against nearby model years before deciding.

How does the 2021 BMW X5 compare to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

Our experts score the 2021 BMW X5 8/10 and the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE 8/10.

The X5 gives you a lower average used price and a stronger share of good and great deals, while the GLE carries a higher average price but more listings overall. The BMW also offers a broader mix of powertrains in this comparison, including a plug-in hybrid option, while the Mercedes-Benz GLE’s listed engine is the smaller 2.0-litre four-cylinder. If you want the better value proposition, the X5 has the edge; if you want to browse a larger pool of listings, the GLE gives you more inventory.
