CarGurus Analysis: 2021 BMW X5
overall

Summary
With 31 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,299 CAD, 19.4% of 2021 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 BMW X5 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW X5 stands out as a large luxury SUV that tries to balance space, comfort, technology and a wide range of engines and trims. It was fully redesigned for the 2019 model year, and by 2021 the lineup had grown to include the SUV’s second-generation plug-in hybrid variant. That broad mix gives the X5 a flexible appeal for buyers who want a premium family vehicle with multiple powertrain choices.
It also benefits from a consistent overall design and utility across the range, including a large cargo area. Owners commonly praise the smooth ride, safety features and high-quality interior, along with the advanced technology and strong resale value. The main drawback is price, which some find high, especially once additional features are added.

Very impressed with the smooth ride and many safety features. Air ride suspension and ventilated front seats will make our long car trips less taxing. Ordered a 2022 X5 45e plug in hybrid with electric range of 40 miles. Great for around town errands. And the $7,500 federal tax credit was icing on the cake. The X5 could be compared to the higher end Lexus SUV but seems BMW is one of the few car companies that have plug in hybrids available in a reasonable time frame - 30 days. Toyota dealer said the wait for a Rav 4 Prime plug in hybrid is 2 to 4 years. Same for Ford Escape plug in hybrid - dealer not able to say when it might be available.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — 4.7/5. The expert rating is 8/10, and the model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

With 37.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its smooth ride, safety features, and high-quality interior. The expert assessment also highlights the X5’s solid engineering and the way its cabin and powertrains are put together.
BMW’s plug-in hybrid setup adds another layer of flexibility, and the seamless transition between electric and gasoline power supports the sense that the X5 is built to be used regularly and confidently. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that higher-spec versions and added options can raise running costs and make repairs more expensive.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Standard xLine models bring matte aluminium grilles plus satin-aluminium underbody protection, roof rails, and side window surrounds, while M Sport models add body-colour wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underbody protection, side skirts, matte aluminium kidney grille bars, and high-gloss black roof rails and window surrounds. The M Sport interior also gets an M sports steering wheel, M-specific pedals, a driver’s footrest, seat piping, and model-exclusive trim strips.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder with 335 horsepower in the xDrive40i, a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 523 hp in the M50i, a 600 hp twin-turbo V8 in the X5 M, and a plug-in hybrid xDrive45e with 389 hp and a 24-kWh battery. All engines use an eight-speed automatic, and the hybrid can deliver up to 50 km of all-electric range.
- Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, but the system’s lane-keeping behaviour can be inconsistent in some conditions.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, five USB ports, voice recognition, automatic climate control, proximity key, panoramic sunroof, and remote start. Available upgrades include a head-up display, quad-zone climate control, a wireless charger, and premium audio systems.
- Fuel efficiency: The xDrive45e is rated at 4.7 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when using electricity and gas, and 11.5 L/100 km when running strictly on gasoline. Other versions are less efficient, with the xDrive model at 10.4 L/100 km combined, the M50i at 12.7 L/100 km combined, and the X5 M at 15.7 L/100 km combined.
Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, and X5 M.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the entry point and the best-value choice for most shoppers, because it gives you the core X5 experience with the 3.0-litre inline six, standard AWD, and the full suite of standard tech and safety equipment without stepping into the much pricier performance models.
- xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup, up to 50 km of electric-only range, and the added flexibility of charging at home or on the go. It suits you best if you do a lot of short trips and want lower fuel use without giving up X5 practicality.
- M50i: This trim is for you if you want a much stronger V8 and are willing to pay for it. It adds serious performance, but it also comes with higher fuel use and a much higher starting price.
- X5 M: This is the most extreme version, with 600 hp and a clear performance focus. It makes sense only if outright speed matters more to you than cost, efficiency, or everyday value.
All X5 models include the standard safety suite, while the available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds more advanced adaptive cruise functionality.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 162 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.09% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $43,773 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $43,778 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,560 CAD.
That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s average, you may have less room for appreciation than owners who bought when prices were higher. Still, the X5’s broad appeal, premium image, and strong demand for well-equipped luxury SUVs should help support used-market interest over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?
The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera.
There are some caveats to keep in mind. The hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package can struggle to react smoothly in traffic and may have trouble maintaining lane position in sunshine or light rain, which means you should not assume the advanced driver-assistance features will work flawlessly in every situation.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model year adds the second-generation plug-in hybrid variant to the lineup, broadening the X5’s appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the broadest mix of powertrains and a market that has cooled enough to create some negotiating room, the 2021 X5 is the better path. If you are mainly shopping on price, you may still want to compare nearby model years and focus on the best-equipped example you can find within your budget.
How does the 2021 BMW X5 compare to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?
Our experts score the 2021 BMW X5 8/10 and the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE 8/10.
The X5 gives you a stronger average used-price advantage and a larger share of good or great deals, while the GLE has more listings available. The BMW also offers a wider spread of powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid, which may matter more if you want flexibility. If you are comparing value and variety, the X5 has the edge; if you want to browse a larger pool of listings, the GLE is worth a look.
