CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volvo XC90
Summary
With 76 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,425 CAD, 27.6% of 2020 Volvo XC90 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volvo XC90 4.62 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volvo XC90 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that blends Scandinavian design, family practicality and a strong safety reputation. It is a three-row SUV with a spacious and comfortable cabin, and it appeals both to families and to buyers who want something sophisticated and practical. For shoppers comparing it with established rivals, its distinctive character comes from the way it combines elegance, versatility and a safety-first approach.
For 2020, the XC90 gained a refreshed infotainment system and mild-hybrid drivetrains, which helped keep it feeling current. The interior features a vertical touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, top-quality materials and superb accessibility. Safety equipment is a major part of its appeal too, with City Safety, Pilot Assist for semi-autonomous driving and a 360-degree camera system among its technologies. Buyers also get standard all-wheel drive, and the available powertrains range from a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder to a plug-in hybrid with up to 400 horsepower.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The XC90’s base models are underpowered, and ownership can bring higher maintenance costs typical of European luxury vehicles. Some plug-in hybrid models can also suffer from premature battery wear, while minor infotainment glitches are worth watching for. Even so, the 2020 Volvo XC90 remains appealing for buyers who want a refined, well-equipped and safety-focused SUV with genuine everyday usefulness.

Is the 2020 Volvo XC90 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volvo XC90 earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable driving experience, the spacious interior, and the strong safety focus. You also get a family-friendly layout with plenty of features, which fits well if you want a refined three-row SUV that balances practicality with a premium feel.
With 27.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still enough market activity for you to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Volvo XC90 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free for many shoppers, especially when you value comfort, safety, and everyday usability. The strong long-term ownership appeal comes through in the way drivers describe the XC90’s overall experience.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that European luxury ownership can bring higher maintenance costs, so a careful inspection and service history matter.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volvo XC90?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 76 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.52% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $30,389 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volvo XC90's resale value?
The current average of $30,389 CAD sits slightly below last year's $37,297 CAD.
That price movement suggests the XC90 has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer market than owners saw a year ago. If you buy at today’s average, your resale position will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service records. A well-kept example should still appeal to shoppers looking for a premium three-row SUV with strong safety credentials.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $35,018 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $30,389 CAD average.
- It adds modest updates and newly standard tech features.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2020 if value matters most, because it offers the strongest price advantage and solid owner satisfaction. If you want a newer model with a few extra standard features and are comfortable paying more, the 2021 is the better secondary path.
