CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volvo XC90
Summary
With 35 currently listed for sale and an average price of $31,173 CAD, 34.3% of 2020 Volvo XC90 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volvo XC90 4.62 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volvo XC90 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that blends Scandinavian design, family practicality and a strong safety reputation. It offers a spacious and comfortable cabin, with a vertical touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus high-quality materials throughout. The second row has decent space, and Volvo says the third row can comfortably accommodate people up to 5’7” tall. Some versions also add a crystal gear shifter made by Orrefors, which gives the interior an extra touch of distinction.
For 2020, the XC90 gained mild-hybrid drivetrains and an improved infotainment system as part of its mid-cycle refresh. It also comes with a broad list of safety and convenience features, including City Safety, Pilot Assist, a 360-degree camera system, four-zone climate control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats and outboard second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel. All Canadian second-generation XC90s come with standard all-wheel drive, and the available powertrains range from the 250-horsepower T5 to the 316-horsepower T6 and the plug-in hybrid T8 with up to 400 horsepower.
That said, the XC90 is not without compromises. Base models are underpowered, and buyers should be aware of potentially high maintenance costs. Reliability is generally good for the second generation, but the plug-in hybrid models can suffer from premature battery wear and minor infotainment glitches. Even so, the 2020 XC90 remains appealing for shoppers who want a refined, safety-focused SUV with genuine space for passengers and a premium feel.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volvo XC90?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right example.
- Deal availability: 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 76 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 21.84% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $30,413 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volvo XC90's resale value?
The current average of $30,413 CAD sits slightly below last year's $38,910 CAD.
That price movement suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the current average or below it, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s higher market level. Strong demand for well-equipped, family-friendly luxury SUVs can also help support values when the vehicle is kept in good condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 21.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $35,397 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $30,413 CAD average.
- It adds newly standard tech features.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the better value if you want a well-liked XC90 at a lower entry price, especially with current pricing well below last year’s level. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year and a few added tech updates, the 2021 is the secondary path to consider.
