Used 2020 Ford Explorer for Sale nearAjax, ON

How much does the 2020 Ford Explorer cost?

Prices have softened 17.80% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 389 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Ford Explorer a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Ford Explorer earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, impressive power, stylish design, and advanced safety features. The roomy cabin and modern technology also come up often, and many shoppers like that it feels fun to drive for a family SUV.

The trade-offs are the cheap-feeling interior materials and the high price, which can make it feel less compelling than some rivals. In practical terms, it suits you best if you want a larger SUV with a more performance-oriented edge and plenty of space for family duty.

Only 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful shopping.

Is the 2020 Ford Explorer reliable?

Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with many drivers describing it as a fun-to-drive SUV that meets many families’ needs. The same feedback also highlights its spacious interior and modern technology, which are the kinds of traits that usually support confidence over time.

The expert assessment also suggests the Explorer is built around a capable chassis and strong powertrains, which helps reinforce the sense that it should hold up well in regular use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that higher running costs and cabin-quality concerns may matter more as the vehicle ages.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Explorer?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin design is stylish and the SUV is notably spacious, but the interior materials feel cheap, especially in a vehicle that can get expensive quickly. You should pay close attention to whether the trim you’re considering feels equipped enough for the money.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder, while higher trims can bring a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 with much stronger output. All trims in Canada use AWD, and the V6 versions are the ones that lean hardest into the Explorer’s quicker-feeling character.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot 360 comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, auto high beams, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, reverse braking, and a passenger front knee airbag.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and factory navigation as standard. Higher trims can add a 10-inch vertical touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.3-litre engine is rated at 11.6 L/100 km city, 8.7 L/100 km highway, and 10.3 L/100 km combined. The V6 versions are rated at 13.3 L/100 km city, 9.8 L/100 km highway, and 11.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford Explorer is offered in 4 trim levels: XLT, Limited, Platinum, ST.

Here's the short version:

• XLT: This is the entry point and the value-focused choice if you want the Explorer’s core strengths without stretching too far. You still get standard AWD, the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and Ford Co-Pilot 360, so it covers the essentials well.
• Limited: This trim adds a more upscale feel and is the one to consider if you want a better-equipped family SUV without jumping all the way to the performance models. It also sits in the range where the available hybrid powertrain appears, though that version is treated separately in the source material.
• Platinum: Choose this if you want the stronger V6 experience with a more premium equipment set. It is aimed at buyers who care about power and refinement more than value.
• ST: This is the performance pick, with the 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, sportier tuning, and the most aggressive character in the lineup. It suits you best if you want the quickest, sharpest-feeling Explorer and are willing to pay for it.

Ford Co-Pilot 360 is standard across the range, so safety coverage is strong even before you move up the trim ladder.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Explorer?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 389 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.80% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $26,782 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $26,782 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,581 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future sellers if they bought at a lower used price. It also means there may be less room for further softening than there was a year ago, especially if you keep the vehicle in strong condition and choose a desirable trim.

Because the Explorer still has broad appeal as a roomy, modern SUV, demand should remain reasonably steady. But if you plan to sell later, the current trend shows that pricing discipline will matter more than ever.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2020 Ford Explorer earns a five-star safety rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot 360 comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, auto high beams, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, reverse braking, and a passenger front knee airbag. That gives you a strong standard safety package even before you look at higher trims.

One caveat is that reverse braking activated falsely during testing, which is worth keeping in mind if you rely heavily on parking aids.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.80% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model brings an all-new chassis, more technology, and hybrid and high-performance powertrains, which makes it a more modern and broader-appeal Explorer than the previous year.

The bottom line: If you want the most modern-feeling Explorer in this price band, the 2020 is the one to target. If you’re shopping mainly on value, you should be especially selective and focus on listings that are priced near the low end of the range, because the model’s cabin quality and pricing can still make some examples feel expensive for what you get.
