Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns 4.14/5 from owners and 8.17/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers repeatedly praise its performance, comfortable interior, and beautiful design, with the M340i drawing especially strong enthusiasm for its power and driving dynamics. The overview also points to a sedan that is fun to drive, comfortable, and backed by a strong engine, which helps explain its broad appeal if you want a luxury car that still feels engaging. The main trade-offs are a polarising design and poor value for money, and some owners found the cabin a bit cramped for taller occupants or the interior noise level distracting.

Good and great deals account for 32.6% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a car that many drivers felt good about living with over time, with praise centred on performance, comfort, and a premium feel. It also highlights the kind of dependable, trouble-free ownership many shoppers want from a luxury sedan, even if the feedback is not universally glowing. On the expert side, the car is described as a strong, well-sorted performer that feels like a mature product, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.

BMW includes free scheduled maintenance and warranty for the first four years or 80,000 km of ownership, which helps reduce early ownership risk. For used buyers, the bigger long-term concern is that this is still a premium BMW, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 330i includes BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system in Canada, but it does not include extra-cost metallic paint. The M340i adds a much more performance-focused character and is the trim that the expert notes single out as especially impressive.
• Powertrain: The M340i uses a 3.0-litre turbo inline six-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with BMW’s rear-biased xDrive AWD drivetrain and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
• Safety package: To get BMW’s latest advanced driver assistance systems, you need the Advanced Driver Assistance package. The package includes safety features that worked accurately in testing, but the lane-keeping assist can feel abrupt.
• Infotainment: BMW’s iDrive system uses a touchscreen display, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the centre-console controller. The touchscreen is easy to use, while gesture control is optional.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-consumption figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the more accessible choice if you want the 3 Series experience without stretching to the top performance model. It still gives you BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system in Canada, and the expert notes that most driving enthusiasts would be quite happy with it while saving a few thousand dollars.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim if you care most about performance. It adds the 3.0-litre turbo inline six-cylinder engine, rear-biased xDrive AWD, a rear M Sport differential, massive M Sport brakes, and the strongest driving character in the range. The expert is especially enthusiastic about this version.

For safety, the Advanced Driver Assistance package is optional, so check carefully whether a used example has it fitted.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully before committing.

• Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 129 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.03% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $30,104 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $32,942 CAD sits slightly below last year's $37,027 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about where the market has settled. If you own one now, the current trend suggests resale values are under some pressure compared with a year ago, so condition, mileage, and equipment will matter more when it is time to sell. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should still attract interest, especially from shoppers who want a premium sport sedan.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?

The BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

To equip the car with BMW’s latest advanced driver assistance systems, you need the Advanced Driver Assistance package. The package brings the brand’s newest safety tech, and the expert notes that the features were accurate when used, though smoothness was sometimes lacking. The lane-keeping assist is described as rather abrupt, so you should test it carefully if the car has that package.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.03% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 stands out for its especially impressive M340i guise, which the expert highlights as proof that BMW’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” claim still has substance.

The bottom line: If you want a used 3 Series that blends strong performance, comfort, and premium-sedan polish, the 2020 model is the one to focus on. If you are more price-sensitive, the softer market and decent deal availability make it worth shopping carefully for a well-kept example rather than rushing into the first one you see.
