CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI
Summary
With 60 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,340 CAD, 26.7% of 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI stands out because it blends hot-hatch performance with everyday usability. In this generation, Volkswagen kept the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and gave it 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while still offering a six-speed manual transmission alongside a seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. That combination helps explain why the GTI has long been seen as the original hot hatch: it is quick, engaging, and still designed to be affordable.
It also brings a more modern cabin than earlier GTIs. The interior features a standard behind-the-wheel digital display, a clean dash, and a standard eight-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Heated plaid cloth sports seats are standard, which reinforces the car’s distinctive character, and available equipment can include heated outboard rear seats, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and navigation. The exterior keeps the familiar sporty cues too, with longer and lower proportions, standard LED headlights, standard LED fog lights, an optional front light bar, and new L-shaped taillights.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2019 Golf GTI offers strong performance, sharp handling, and the practicality of a hatchback. It is also a car that still feels special, thanks to its plaid seats and sporty detailing. The main trade-offs are that its technology can be unintuitive and its prices can be high, and it is smaller than most SUVs.

Fun to drive! Bolster not too aggressive, great trunk space. Nice mix of sporty and usable. Back seats are a little tight though.

This car is fantastic to drive and a good value gently used. It might be one of the best fun, daily drivers around.

The 2019 Rabbit Edition is what I want. Not sure its got LSD, but unlike psychotropics, this car transports you to your inner road. Your way of gripping a turn, or changing lanes with only teo looks on your mirror. The wheels give you a strong sense of security which pulls with you with your hands squeezing the steering wheel just right, a posture eager for a driver who likes to lean as they go. I tried out the civics, including a coup. I tried the corollas with their swinging grip. But neither of them have the history of cars which move as you do, holding tight and ready to roam . Neither is in tune, right out of the gates with enough power and tactile agility, the way the GTI Rabbit Edition drives. And the 19 has the improvements that felt like an achievement, lasting for a couple of years before the MK8 arrived on the scene. Ive driven the 23 Rabbit Edition wirh all the latest Golf technology, particularly in the way power is sent to the suspension. I dug it much. However, after driving a standard GTI, which happened to be that gray color you have on the face of this announcement, I am intrigued and excited to test drive a 19 Rabbit Edition. One of its perks is the wheel spoke design and color, a glossy black giving the look of a car that has good power and belies what you might believe how a car conceived on an Autobahn can feel in your hands and under your feet. The automatic is my preferred stick, because of the need to pay more attention to the many objects in the roads tgese days, but I would take a manuel any day of the week, if it was out there encouraging me to try it on. Thank you allowing this chunck of prose to give a little bump in the road of attention. I would really love this car. I would be an ambasador for the GTI , proud to serve as its driver.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the fun-to-drive character, sporty performance, and practicality, while also noting the comfortable interior and spacious trunk. That makes it a strong fit if you want a hatchback that can handle daily commuting and still feel entertaining on a weekend drive. With 25.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI reliable?

The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with praise for its practicality and all-around livability. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright satisfaction and more about finding one that has been maintained well and still feels tight and trouble-free.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 62 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.37% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,966 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI's resale value?
The current average of $20,396 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,012 CAD.
That softer pricing can be a good entry point for you as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk later because the market has already adjusted. The GTI’s strong enthusiast appeal and practical hatchback format should help it stay relevant with shoppers who want something fun and usable.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, owner satisfaction, and current market softness, the 2019 is the one to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby years and prioritise the listings with the best deal status and lowest asking prices.
