CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Highlander

Summary
With 11 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,076 CAD, 36.4% of 2019 Toyota Highlander listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Highlander 4.74 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Highlander stands out as a practical, comfort-focused midsize SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and safety. It is part of a generation that brought a more upscale look and interior, and Toyota reinforced the body to make it more comfortable on the road. Buyers also get a vehicle that is genuinely useful day to day, with up to 2,387 litres of cargo space with the seats folded down, which is one of the best figures in its class.
It is also well equipped for its age. Every Highlander comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, and automatic emergency braking. The Highlander’s appeal is strengthened by its available hybrid powertrain, which can deliver 6.7 L/100 km combined, and by the fact that Toyota’s safety suite helped the model earn “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety every year since this design went on sale.
That said, the 2019 Highlander is not the most exciting SUV to drive. The source describes it as lacking vigour, with a soft suspension and steering that is generally numb and uncommunicative. Some owners also wish for more rear seat space, and the Highlander can be expensive compared with rivals. Even so, for shoppers who value comfort, versatility, fuel economy in hybrid form, and a long-term ownership proposition, it remains an appealing choice.

Reviewed a 2019 Toyota SE FWD on Aug 10, 2025
I just purchased a pre-owner Toyota Highlander. I picked the 2019 model because it is the last model year that had the rear window that opened independently from the lift gate. I missed that feature in my last two Honda CRV’s because the older (gen 1 &2) Honda CRV’s used to have that feature too. Both the CRV and Highlander have similar features and are both reliable and wonderful cars, which will last a long time. I just needed a larger car for my current needs. The Honda did get better gas mileage than the Toyota, but it was also a smaller SUV. I have owned different Honda CR-Vs for the last 30 years, and have been very happy with them. This is my first Toyota. The Highlander is very comfortable and roomy. My daughter really likes the captain’s seats in the back. I am very happy with the Highlander and plan to have it for many years.

Comfortable, strong and stylish. Plenty of room for wife's wheel chair, her and myself along with what ever else we need to transport. Did have a problem starting once after sitting 3 weeks unproven. Small portable starter was very handy, started right up. No issues since. Lot of safety reminders, clearance between you and car in front of you in cruse control, out of lane warning. Wish it had digital speed display. Nav works well. I have SiriusXM radio, killer sound.

How much does the 2019 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $29,621 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $29,402 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $33,765 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $33,242 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.89% |
Prices have softened 10.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 175 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.7/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and reliability, and many also appreciate the safety features and engine performance. That lines up well with its role as a practical, comfort-focused midsize SUV that works especially well for everyday family use and long-term ownership. The main trade-offs are the rear seat space and the price point, but the overall package remains appealing if you value ease of use over excitement.
With 29.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still a meaningful share of attractive inventory to consider.
Is the 2019 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary highlights reliability directly, along with comfort and a sense that the vehicle is dependable for daily use. That kind of feedback matters if you want a used SUV you can count on over the long haul, especially when you are shopping for something intended to stay in service for years.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying too much for a vehicle that is otherwise likely to deliver steady, trouble-free service.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 175 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.89% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $29,402 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $29,621 CAD sits slightly below last year's $33,242 CAD.
That decline suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you buy at today’s average, you may have less room for appreciation in the near term, though the Highlander’s reputation can help support demand when you eventually resell. Strong owner satisfaction can also help keep interest steady as the vehicle ages.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $34,983 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $29,621 CAD average.
- It was redesigned for a calmer, more refined ride.
The bottom line: Choose the 2019 if you want the better value and are comfortable with its comfort-first character. Consider the 2020 if you are willing to pay more for the redesigned model and a more premium-feeling driving experience.
