CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Hyundai Elantra
overall

Summary
With 37 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,816 CAD, 32.4% of 2019 Hyundai Elantra listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Hyundai Elantra 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
Why it stands out
Freshened up for 2019, the Hyundai Elantra remains an incredible value among compact sedans, which is its biggest appeal for shoppers looking for a lot of car for the money. The update gives it a more polished feel, but the driving experience is still described as ho-hum, so its strengths are more about value and everyday usefulness than excitement.
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is also presented as an updated and upgraded model, though the test-drive summary suggests that satisfaction depends heavily on what matters most to the buyer. It stands out most clearly if you want a practical compact sedan with a strong value proposition, but it is less compelling if engaging driving dynamics are a priority.

I think the features on this car is amazing and it is a great value. It is a good size, economical, just enough power and just enough weight to be stable and a fun little car to drive around the area when running errands or the quarterly work meeting, or just to the dog park and hanging with friends. It's nice looking, and a bit loud on the road sometimes but nothing a little sound barrier lining can't fix... or shocks.

This car was a good value. It has good acceleration and a quiet interior. Personally, I like the styling of this model better than the current model year.

The features are impeccable. I love that it has three different types of “drive”, I love all of the assist features, and the trunk is really big for a Saran plus the back seats can come down! I got the best deal I could find on this car and I got it in the color I wanted. I love it. The only thing I dislike is how low the ceiling is. The seat can lower but it still feels a little strange.

How much does the 2019 Hyundai Elantra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,347 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $12,226 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $15,291 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,291 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −19.25% |
Prices have softened 19.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 447 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its impressive features, smooth acceleration, and comfortable interior. The spacious trunk and driving assist features also come up often, which fits its role as a practical compact sedan for daily errands and longer trips. In the broader overview, it stands out most when you want a lot of car for the money rather than an engaging drive.
With 27.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels comfortable, useful, and easy to live with over time, with many owners describing it as a dependable choice for everyday driving. The expert drive notes also frame it as a very nice car that delivers quality and value, even if it is not especially exciting to drive. Hyundai’s five-year or 100,000-kilometre warranty coverage and five years of roadside assistance also support confidence in ownership.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s modest driving character and cabin compromises suit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The sedan is sold as Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate trims. The base Essential is the main feature gap to watch for, since it misses the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that comes on higher trims, along with the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert that are standard on all trims but the base model. The Ultimate adds the most equipment, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, navigation, a larger 8-inch touchscreen, a 4.2-inch driver information centre, and Safe Exit Assist.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, paired with front-wheel drive. The automatic transmission is the easier everyday choice, while the manual is tied to the lower trims. The driving experience is described as acceptable rather than lively, so this is more about smooth, predictable commuting than excitement.
- Safety package: The available driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a driver-monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection enhancement, and Safe Exit Assist. Some of these features are standard only on higher trims, while others are bundled in the Sun and Safety Package.
- Infotainment: Higher trims get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch display, navigation, and an Infinity premium sound system with Clari-Fi digital music restoration technology. Limited or Ultimate trims also add a free five-year trial of Hyundai Bluelink services.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Elantra uses 7.4 L/100 km in combined driving with the automatic transmission, or 8.0 L/100 km with the manual.
Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, Sport, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, but it is the most stripped-down version. If you want the lowest purchase price and can live without the 7-inch touchscreen and the broader safety tech found higher up, it is the budget choice.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus key safety equipment that makes the car easier to recommend for everyday use.
- Luxury: This trim adds satellite radio and the free three-month trial subscription, and it also qualifies for the free five-year Bluelink trial. It suits you if you want more convenience and connected features.
- Sport: This is the one to consider if you want the turbocharged character mentioned in the expert summary. It is the enthusiast-leaning choice in the lineup.
- Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, with adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection braking, navigation, the larger 8-inch screen, the premium audio system, and Safe Exit Assist. It is the right pick if you want the most technology and safety content.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and the driver-monitoring system are standard on higher trims, while the Sun and Safety Package adds them to lower versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should have room to shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 447 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.25% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,226 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $12,347 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,291 CAD.
That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car easier to buy now but less favourable for a future seller. If you own one, the softer pricing means you may need to be patient to get top dollar. On the other hand, the model’s value-oriented reputation can help keep demand steady among shoppers looking for an affordable compact sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, thanks to four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist starting on the Preferred trim. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system can be added through the Sun and Safety Package, and those features are standard on higher trims. The Ultimate trim adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian-detection enhancement, and Safe Exit Assist.
The main caveat is that the LATCH anchor accessibility result is weaker than the rest of the crash-test performance, so child-seat installation is worth checking carefully.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It was freshened for 2019 with a more polished feel and stronger value focus.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $14,697 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $12,347 CAD average.
- It adds improved fuel efficiency and newly packaged safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2019 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and solid equipment. If you are willing to pay more for the later model’s added efficiency and safety packaging, the 2020 is the better secondary path.
