CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Volvo XC90
Summary
With 47 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,929 CAD, 25.5% of 2018 Volvo XC90 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volvo XC90 4.78 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Volvo XC90 stands out as a luxury midsize SUV that blends elegant Scandinavian design with a strong emphasis on safety and practicality. In its second generation, it brought a complete overhaul, with a sleek minimalist look and a cabin that feels far more luxurious than the original model. The interior is especially appealing thanks to its vertical touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, top-quality materials, and easy access to the second and third rows. Volvo also claims the third row can comfortably accommodate people up to 5’7” tall, which helps explain why the XC90 remains attractive to families who want three-row versatility without giving up a premium feel.
This model year offers a wide spread of powertrains, including the T5 with 250 horsepower, the T6 with 316 horsepower, and the T8 plug-in hybrid with up to 400 horsepower. All Canadian second-generation XC90s come with standard all-wheel drive, and the safety equipment is a major part of the appeal, with City Safety, Pilot Assist for semi-autonomous driving, and a 360-degree camera system included. Buyers also benefit from the 2020 mid-cycle refresh, which added mild-hybrid drivetrains and an improved infotainment system, while the later trim structure and standard equipment list make the XC90 feel well equipped. On the downside, the buying guide notes that base models are underpowered, and owners should be aware of potential maintenance costs, along with possible infotainment glitches and premature battery wear in plug-in hybrid models.
Owners of the 2018 XC90 also tend to praise its safety, luxurious interior, and strong performance, which lines up with the model’s broader reputation. That said, some have been put off by the remote start subscription fee, a reminder that even a well-regarded luxury SUV can have ownership quirks.

Excellent value Vehicle is well equipped Comparable to ten T6 y but more reliable, better on gas, smaller engine . Only missing thigh cushion which is stabfearf in the T6 but includes retractable (thoracic/lumbar) spinal cushion in drivers seat. Great for those of us with sensitive backs

Great riding car. A lot of nice features. Only bad thing is remote start is not a standard feature and requires an annual subscription fee of about $200. Im enjoying everything else about this car though.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volvo XC90?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be patient and compare listings carefully.

What is the 2018 Volvo XC90's resale value?
The current average of $21,941 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,794 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price, you may be better positioned to preserve value later. The XC90’s premium image and family-friendly appeal should continue to support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a three-row luxury SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 21.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2018 XC90 is a strong choice if you want a well-liked luxury three-row SUV and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you’re more price-sensitive, it’s worth comparing nearby model years to see whether a similar XC90 offers better value or a better-equipped example for the money.
