CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 189 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,995 CAD, 29.6% of 2018 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Ford Mustang 4.61 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
With a nip here and a tuck there, plus substantial mechanical and technological improvements, the 2018 Ford Mustang aims to ensure its continued popularity. It is presented as less rudimentary and more sophisticated than ever, blurring the line between mainstream and premium cars or sports cars and muscle cars. The Mustang’s long-standing role as the car that gave rise to the “pony car” name also helps explain why it remains such a distinctive presence in the American two-door sports coupe segment.
That broader appeal is reinforced by the way the 2018 Ford Mustang is described as no longer being limited to just the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger when performance is considered. Owners’ feedback also points to the same basic strengths: power, sporty design, enjoyable driving, fast acceleration, and a smooth ride. At the same time, some owners were disappointed by trunk space and discrepancies in vehicle specifications, which suggests the Mustang’s character comes with a few practical compromises.

This is a driver’s car. Base model, performance package, standard shift. It’s got all the right parts and it is exactly the car I would have ordered if I were there to purchase this car when it was new.

First the color Kona Blue is beautiful especially in the sunlight. Ride is smooth and comfortable. I love that you change to sport mode. And your comfort or sport for steering. Love it! Inexpensive muscle car.

Engine sounds good. Interior has lots of cigarette burns. Front bumper cover was repainted, could have done a better job on the clear coat. Scratch down the passenger side quarter panel. Would have bought for cash if price was a little bit lower.

There are 187 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Ford Mustang earns a 4.61/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its power, sporty design, enjoyable driving experience, fast acceleration, and smooth ride. The overview also points to broad appeal as a distinctive two-door sports coupe that blends mainstream and premium cues, while still delivering the kind of performance and character you expect from a Mustang. With 28.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.61/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights a fun, stylish, and affordable muscle car that many people enjoy living with over time. The expert review also describes the Mustang as more sophisticated than before, with performance that feels well sorted and a ride that can be smooth when you want it to be. Ford’s maintenance-friendly ownership story is helped by the fact that the Mustang EcoBoost can be bought with a Performance Package for closer to $30,000 CAD, which keeps the entry point relatively accessible for used buyers.
For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is buying a car that has been driven hard without the right maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Mustang?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: You should know whether you’re looking at an EcoBoost, GT, or Premium-equipped car, because the Premium trim adds higher-quality interior materials and leather seating, while the base cars are more basic inside.
- Powertrain: The Mustang offers a turbocharged 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine or a V8 GT, with rear-wheel drive standard across the range. The 10-speed automatic, six-speed manual, launch control, drag strip mode, and line-lock technology are all part of the performance story.
- Safety package: The car includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts. The lane-keeping assist system can be intrusive, but it can be switched off.
- Infotainment: You get Sync 3 with a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, Track Apps, Bluetooth, an available navigation system, a rearview camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Ford Sync Connect for remote access through a smartphone app.
- Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 12.5 L/100 km in combined driving.
Which 2018 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2018 Ford Mustang is offered in 4 trim levels: EcoBoost Coupe, EcoBoost Premium, GT, and GT Premium.
Here's the short version:
- EcoBoost Coupe: This is the entry point if you want the Mustang look and feel at the lowest price, and it is the value play if you care more about affordability than V8 power.
- EcoBoost Premium: Choose this if you want the cheaper engine but also want a nicer cabin, since Premium trim upgrades the interior materials.
- GT: This is the right pick if you want the V8 experience and stronger performance without paying for the extra luxury touches.
- GT Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want the full Mustang experience, because it combines the V8 with upgraded interior materials and the most complete feel.
The safety package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Mustang?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 187 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.70% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,262 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $26,237 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,738 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar immediately. If you own one now, the current trend implies you may need to price competitively to stand out. On the other hand, a well-kept Mustang with the right equipment and a strong service record should still attract attention from shoppers who want performance and style.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.61/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2018 Mustang earns an Acceptable rather than Good rating for small-overlap frontal-impact protection from the IIHS, and it earns a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford equips it with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, a driver monitoring system, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alerts. The system is tuned for performance driving, though the lane-keeping assist can detract from enjoyment if you leave it on. The main caveat is the IIHS small-overlap result, which is weaker than the rest of its crash-test performance.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.61/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 brings substantial mechanical and technological improvements, including a more sophisticated feel and updated driver-assistance tech.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,739 CAD, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $26,237 CAD average.
- It adds Bullitt-specific styling, extra power, and a more heritage-focused special-edition character.
The bottom line: If you want the better value and broader used-market choice, the 2018 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a special-edition Mustang with extra character and a stronger collector-style appeal, the 2019 is the more distinctive choice.
