CarGurus Analysis: 2018 BMW X5
Summary
With 41 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,463 CAD, 34.1% of 2018 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW X5 4.35 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury SUV that still puts driving feel at the centre of the experience. BMW built it on a rear-wheel-drive platform, gave it standard xDrive all-wheel drive in Canada, and paired it with turbocharged inline six-cylinder or V8 engines through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is also described as one of the more dynamic SUVs in its class, with handling that is more precise than that of the Audi Q7 and the Mercedes GLE and sharp enough to rival the Land Rover Discovery Sport. For buyers who want an SUV that feels more engaging than most, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
The 2018 model also benefits from the third generation’s more refined direction. BMW’s redesign brought a cleaner, more conservative look, added refinement and sophistication, and kept the cabin roomy with outstanding visibility and generous cargo space. It also offered the latest versions of BMW’s iDrive infotainment technology and many modern safety features, with iDrive 6.0, touchscreen functionality, wireless smartphone charging, and Wi‑Fi hotspot access starting with the 2017 model year. The optional third-row seat remained available in this generation, which adds some flexibility, although the X5 is still fundamentally a two-row, five-passenger SUV.
There are trade-offs, though. The X5’s reliability record is not especially strong, and ownership costs can be high when major maintenance or repairs are needed. The split tailgate design can also make it harder to reach items that slide forward to the base of the back seat. Even so, the 2018 BMW X5 remains appealing because it combines luxury, practicality, and genuinely rewarding road manners in a way that many rivals do not.

I think this car is way too overpriced for the features and the condition. Considering it has almost 90k miles, and with the base packaging, this should be somewhere around 16-18k at the dealership assuming no technical or mechanical issues observed with the car. Almost 21k is crazy. The car does not have: M package Premium plus package, whatever that was called that gives you multi controllable seats, shade screens on the back 360 camera and all the other good stuff. The car seemed factory base model, with no features. So 21k is way too expensive.

Is the 2018 BMW X5 a good car?
Generally — the 4.35/5 user rating suggests you can feel confident shopping this model year. Drivers consistently praise its comfort, smooth driving experience, and blend of luxury and utility, while also highlighting the sporty handling and strong feature content. That lines up well with the X5’s role as a luxury SUV that still prioritises driving feel, roomy practicality, and everyday usability. With 33.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a reasonable chance of finding a well-priced example.
Is the 2018 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.35/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that many owners find comfortable and enjoyable to live with, with enough confidence in the driving experience to support repeat satisfaction over time. At the same time, the broader ownership picture suggests you should pay close attention to mileage, service history, and overall condition before buying. For used shoppers, the main long-term risk is that maintenance and repair costs can rise quickly if the vehicle has been neglected.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 160 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.95% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $24,688 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $24,833 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,901 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X5 easier to buy now but may also limit near-term upside for a future seller. If you plan to resell later, your best protection is choosing a well-kept example with strong documentation and avoiding vehicles that need immediate maintenance. A clean history and desirable condition should matter more than chasing the cheapest listing.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.35/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.35/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $35,370 CAD, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $24,833 CAD average.
- It brings a redesigned interior and updated iDrive.
The bottom line: The 2018 is the better value if you want the X5’s comfort, driving feel, and luxury without paying a premium for the next generation. If you want the newer design and can stretch your budget, the 2019 is the upgrade path; if price matters most, the 2018 is the smarter buy.
