CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW X5
Summary
With 30 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,820 CAD, 33.3% of 2016 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW X5 4.75 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury SUV that still puts driving feel at the centre of the experience. It sits on a rear-wheel-drive platform, uses inline-six or V8 engines, and comes with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard in Canada. It is also described as not being designed for off-road use, with moderately challenging trails being the limit, especially on versions with larger wheels and performance tyres.
Inside, the X5 is a midsize, two-row, five-passenger SUV with a roomy cabin, outstanding visibility, and generous cargo space. One drawback is BMW’s split tailgate design, which can make it harder to reach items that have slid forward to the base of the back seat. For buyers, that mix of comfort, practicality, and a rewarding driving character is a big part of the appeal.
For this generation, the X5 also benefits from BMW’s ongoing improvements in technology and refinement. The 2016 model year sits within the third generation, which offered the latest versions of BMW’s iDrive infotainment technology and many modern safety features. It also had a small, optional third-row seat, and the 2016 plug-in hybrid powertrain used a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 23 kilometres of electric-only range and combined fuel consumption of 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres. The trade-off is that ownership can be costly: reliability is below average, and major maintenance or repairs are likely to cost more than average.

This is a great, solid, fuel-efficient car. It accelerates well, breaks easily, is quiet, and has room for luggage, etc. in the back. No emissions for most errands around town, and no EV distance anxiety if you are traveling.

Is the 2016 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2016 BMW X5 earns a 4.75/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its performance, luxurious interior, and features, and many say the powerful engine and sporty driving experience are hard to beat. In practical terms, that lines up well with its role as a midsize, two-row luxury SUV that balances comfort, visibility, and cargo space for everyday use. With 35.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2016 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with many shoppers valuing its trouble-free ownership experience relative to the driving enjoyment it delivers. That said, the model’s complexity and higher ownership costs mean you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is not whether the X5 feels good to drive, but whether previous upkeep has been thorough enough to keep repair exposure in check.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW X5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 114 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.23% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,552 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $19,729 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,835 CAD.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X5 more attractive to you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it also means resale upside may be more limited unless the vehicle is especially well kept and priced carefully. Because the model still has strong appeal among shoppers who want a luxury SUV with engaging road manners, clean examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a luxury SUV with strong owner appeal, a rewarding driving feel, and a market that has become more buyer-friendly, the 2016 is a sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
