Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Highlander stands out as a practical, family-focused midsize SUV with a strong reputation for comfort, reliability, and everyday usefulness. By this generation, Toyota had given the Highlander a sharper, more muscular shape and more upscale styling and interior features, while also reinforcing the body to make it more comfortable on the road. It remains appealing because it is genuinely versatile: it offers up to 2,387 litres of cargo space with the seats folded down, and Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, including lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, and automatic emergency braking.
For Canadian buyers, the 2017 Highlander is also notable for its standard all-wheel drive and its choice of gas or hybrid powertrains. The gas version uses a 3.5-litre V6 with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, while the hybrid combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor for 243 system horsepower. The hybrid is especially attractive for efficiency, with fuel consumption of 6.7 L/100 km combined, while the gas model averages 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined. Every Highlander also includes an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which helps offset Toyota’s less polished infotainment system.
Its strengths are clear, but the 2017 Highlander is not the most exciting SUV to drive. The source describes it as lacking vigour, with a tiny third row, and notes that Toyota’s tech can still be a hassle to use. Even so, it is easy to see why it appeals to so many shoppers: it is comfortable, practical, well equipped, and backed by Toyota’s strong safety and reliability reputation.

Nicest car I’ve ever owned! Beautiful color, absolutely loaded with options. Comfortable, great power, handles well in snow. Easy access to third row with captains’ seats in second row. Easy to operate radio/clock/blue tooth. It’s similar to Honda Pilot, but maybe a bit smaller. I traded in a Honda CRX and found Highlander just as easy to drive and park. Excellent value.

How much does the 2017 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,380 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $26,028 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $27,833 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,764 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.99% |
Prices have softened 4.99% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 103 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.86/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. The owner feedback highlights comfort, power, and family-friendly design, along with a smooth driving experience and good value. That lines up well with the Highlander’s role as a practical crossover for everyday use, especially if you want a comfortable, versatile SUV rather than something sporty. With 31.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you may also find some attractive options in the market.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with comfort and value showing up repeatedly in the comments. That kind of response matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for family duty and regular commuting. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the core reputation and more about finding a well-kept example with a clean maintenance history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 103 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $26,028 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $26,380 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,764 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can make the vehicle more appealing to buyers now but may also limit upside for a future seller if prices continue to soften. If you buy at the right number, you may reduce the risk of taking a bigger depreciation hit later. Strong demand for practical family SUVs can help support values, but the current trend still favours shoppers more than sellers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Highlander makes the most sense if you want a comfortable, practical family SUV and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you are especially price-sensitive, it is worth comparing nearby model years to see whether a similar example offers a better deal, but the 2017 remains a strong choice when condition, history, and asking price line up well.
