What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The L trim is the value edition and comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, heated front seats, and keyless entry. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, while the Limited Ultimate brings advanced systems such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning, along with leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
• Powertrain: You get a front-wheel-drive layout only, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. The automatic is rated at 7.4 L/100 km combined, while the manual is rated at 8.0 L/100 km combined.
• Safety package: The Elantra includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection are available, with the most advanced driver-assistance features reserved for upper trims.
• Infotainment: Every 2017 Elantra comes with USB/auxiliary audio inputs, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Moving upmarket gets you navigation with turn-by-turn instructions in the colour display in the gauge cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel economy at 7.4 L/100 km combined with the automatic transmission and 8.0 L/100 km combined with the manual.

Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 9 trim levels: L, LE, GL, GLS, SE, Sport, Limited, Limited SE, and Limited Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value-focused entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model while still getting heated front seats and keyless entry.
• LE: This is a sensible step up if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
• GL: This trim adds another layer of convenience and is a good fit if you want a better-balanced daily driver.
• GLS: This is a stronger middle-ground choice if you want more comfort and features without jumping to the top trims.
• SE: This trim is a practical upgrade if you want a more feature-rich Elantra without going all the way to the luxury-oriented versions.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the sportier appearance and a more expressive feel than the mainstream trims.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it brings a strong mix of comfort, technology, and premium features.
• Limited SE: This is for you if you want a more upscale equipment mix than the standard Limited.
• Limited Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most advanced safety and convenience equipment, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning.

The safety-package trim note is straightforward: the most advanced driver-assistance features are concentrated in the upper trims, especially the Limited Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 368 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.29% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $10,209 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $10,233 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,081 CAD.

That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Elantra easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller. If you own one, the softer pricing trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level. Well-equipped trims with strong feature content should be easier to position than bare-bones examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a four-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which also raised a concern about side impacts potentially causing injury to rear passengers.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Hyundai equips the Elantra with electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection are all available. The strongest safety tech is concentrated in the upper trims, so you should check carefully that the specific car you’re considering has the driver-assistance features you want.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.29% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out as a thorough redesign with strong emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety.

The bottom line: If you want the most polished mix of styling, technology, safety, and value in this generation, the 2017 is the one to target. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may still want to compare nearby model years, but the 2017’s combination of softened pricing and strong owner satisfaction makes it a compelling used buy.
