What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The L trim is the value-focused entry point, with heated front seats and keyless entry, while upper trims add more comfort and convenience features. The top Limited Ultimate trim brings advanced systems such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning, along with leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
• Powertrain: The Elantra uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. It is front-wheel drive only, and the drive mode selector lets you choose Normal, Sport, or Eco settings.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. The top Limited Ultimate trim is where the advanced safety systems are highlighted.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available for smartphone integration.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel economy at 8.3 L/100 km city, 6.4 L/100 km highway, and 7.4 L/100 km combined with the automatic transmission, or 9.1 L/100 km city, 6.6 L/100 km highway, and 8.0 L/100 km combined with the manual.

Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 9 trim levels: L, LE, GL, GLS, SE, Sport, Limited, Limited SE, and Limited Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value pick if you want the lowest entry point and can live with the six-speed manual transmission. It still gives you heated front seats and keyless entry, so it covers the basics well.
• LE: This trim is a sensible step up if you want a little more equipment without chasing the highest-priced versions. It sits early in the range and is a good place to shop if you want a balanced mix of price and features.
• GL: This is a middle-ground choice for shoppers who want more comfort and convenience than the entry trims without jumping all the way to the premium end.
• GLS: This trim continues the gradual upgrade path and suits you if you want a better-equipped Elantra without paying for the top-tier technology and safety content.
• SE: This is another mainstream choice in the middle of the range, aimed at buyers who want a well-rounded daily driver with broader equipment coverage.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the sportier-looking trim in the lineup, but keep expectations grounded in the car’s comfort-first character.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because the expert review specifically points to the Limited trim levels as offering the best compact sedan for the money. It adds a more premium feel and a stronger mix of comfort and technology.
• Limited SE: This is for buyers who want a more upscale feature set than the standard Limited and are willing to pay for it.
• Limited Ultimate: This is the trim to target if you want the most complete package, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The safety-package trim note is straightforward: the most advanced driver-assistance features are concentrated in the Limited Ultimate trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re comparing multiple listings.

• Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 372 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.87% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $10,208 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $10,231 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,018 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can be helpful if you are buying now but less favourable if you are planning to sell soon. If you own one, the current trend means you may need to price competitively to move the car quickly. On the other hand, the model’s broad appeal and strong feature content can still support demand among used shoppers looking for value.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it a four-star safety rating while raising a concern about side impacts potentially causing injury to rear passengers.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection.

The main caveat is the NHTSA side-impact concern, so if safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to the condition and equipment level of any used example you consider.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.87% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out as a thorough redesign with a fresh look inside and out, plus a strong emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety.

The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong choice if you want the redesigned Elantra’s better styling, tech, and safety focus at a softened used-car price. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to keep shopping and compare condition, mileage, and trim level carefully, since the market still offers enough inventory to be selective.
