What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The L trim is the value-focused entry point and comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, heated front seats, and keyless entry. Higher trims add more equipment, and the Limited Ultimate brings advanced systems such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
• Powertrain: The Elantra uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, and front-wheel drive is the only drivetrain offered. Drive modes include Normal, Sport, and Eco, and the manual and automatic versions have different fuel-consumption figures.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. The top Limited Ultimate trim is where you find the most advanced safety equipment.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel consumption at 8.3 L/100 km city, 6.4 L/100 km highway, and 7.4 L/100 km combined with the six-speed automatic. With the manual transmission, it rises to 9.1 L/100 km city, 6.6 L/100 km highway, and 8.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 9 trim levels: L, LE, GL, GLS, SE, Sport, Limited, Limited SE, and Limited Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value trim, and it gives you the basics plus heated front seats and keyless entry. It’s the one to consider if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the manual transmission.
• LE: This is the first step up from the base model and is a sensible choice if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
• GL: This trim adds another layer of comfort and convenience, making it a better everyday pick if you want more features than the entry trims.
• GLS: This is a stronger middle-ground choice if you want a more complete feature set without jumping to the upper trims.
• SE: This trim continues the gradual equipment upgrades and suits you if you want a more polished daily driver.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the sportier trim name in the lineup, but the available information here still points more to equipment and value than to true performance character.
• Limited: This is the trim the expert evaluation highlights as especially compelling for the money, thanks to its richer equipment list and strong overall value.
• Limited SE: This is a step beyond the Limited and is best if you want more of the upper-trim content without going all the way to the top.
• Limited Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, with the most advanced safety and convenience features, and it’s the one to buy if you want the most technology and driver assistance.

The safety package is strongest on the upper trims, especially the Limited Ultimate, where the advanced driver-assistance features are concentrated.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

• Deal availability: 25.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 373 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.37% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $10,202 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $10,211 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,358 CAD.

That softer pricing means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment than owners did a year ago. If you’re planning to sell later, the current market suggests you should expect buyers to be price-sensitive and to compare your Elantra closely against other compact cars.

The good news is that strong owner satisfaction can help support demand over time, especially for a car that scores well on comfort, efficiency, and value. Well-equipped examples with desirable features should be easier to position than stripped-down versions.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 25.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.37% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Expert or safety highlight specific to this year from the review: it was redesigned inside and out with a clear emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety, and it earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

The bottom line: The 2017 Elantra is the right pick if you want a value-focused compact sedan with strong safety credentials, good technology, and solid owner satisfaction. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market to shop carefully and target the best-equipped example you can find within your budget.
