Why it stands out

The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado stands out as a midsize pickup that balances utility with everyday usability. By this point in the second generation, Chevrolet had given the truck a broader range of capable powertrains, including a 3.6-litre V6 and an optional 2.8-litre Duramax Diesel engine with 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That diesel also brought class-leading towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms and as low as 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, which made the Colorado especially appealing to buyers who wanted real truck capability without moving up to a full-size pickup.

It also offered more modern cabin tech than many rivals of its era. Higher trims came with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while later low-trim trucks got a 7-inch screen and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The Colorado’s cargo flexibility was another strength, with both extended cab and crew cab body styles available and two bed lengths on the crew cab. For shoppers who wanted a truck that could work hard but still feel reasonably well equipped, that combination was a major part of its appeal.

There were drawbacks, though. The second-generation Colorado’s early transmission woes are a well-known weak point, and models built from 2014 to 2019 could suffer from shakes, jerks, clunks, failure to engage, or complete failure. Some owners also reported HVAC problems and issues with the V6 engine. Even so, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado remained a solid value in the used market, especially in mid-range and higher trims where its performance and brawn were better matched to what buyers expected from a midsize truck.
