CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW X5
Summary
With 29 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,448 CAD, 31.0% of 2017 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW X5 4.47 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury SUV that still puts driving enjoyment at the centre of the experience. BMW built it on a rear-wheel drive platform and equipped it with inline-six or V8 engines, while xDrive all-wheel drive was standard in Canada. It was also not intended for serious off-road use, with moderately challenging trails described as the limit. Even so, it remained a roomy, comfortable, and rewarding SUV to drive, with generous cargo space and strong visibility.
For this model year, the X5’s appeal also came from its balance of practicality and premium features. It was a midsize, two-row, five-passenger SUV, and the interior was described as luxurious, with a small optional third-row seat still available. The generation offered the latest versions of BMW’s iDrive infotainment technology and many modern safety features, and the 2017 model year specifically added iDrive 6.0 with touchscreen functionality, wireless smartphone charging, and Wi-Fi hotspot access. That makes the 2017 BMW X5 feel well equipped for buyers who want a refined family SUV with a sporty edge.
There are trade-offs, though. BMW’s split tailgate design has drawbacks when reaching items that have rolled forward to the base of the back seat, and the X5’s reliability record is unimpressive overall. V8-engined X5s are also not fuel efficient, which raises ownership costs. Even so, for shoppers who value a premium cabin, strong road manners, and everyday usefulness, the 2017 BMW X5 remains an appealing used luxury SUV.

I just purchased my 2017 BMW X5 remotely for the first time. The vehicle is consistent with BMW quality- exemplary craftsmanship. The detail and thoughtfulness that has gone into the vehicle is excellent. We have owned 5 prior to this and so far, the X5 has not disappointed.

AMAZING! The car is beautiful and in pristine condition. It has bells and whistles that I didn’t even know existed. I don’t drive anything else, but an X5 and a 750. Nothing compares to the X5, she’s a beautiful beast!

Generally — the 4.47/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. With 36.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW X5 reliable?

The owner feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centred on its strong performance, comfortable ride, and overall practicality. For long-term ownership, a thorough inspection and service history matter because repair risk can rise quickly if the previous owner deferred upkeep.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW X5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 131 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.44% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,758 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $22,809 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,351 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X5 easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may be better positioned to protect value later. The current spread between the year-round low and high also shows that condition, mileage, and equipment can still influence what future buyers will pay.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.47/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.47/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 BMW X5 is a strong choice if you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with a premium cabin, good road manners, and broad everyday usefulness. If you are price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby years, but the 2017 stands out as a sensible target when you find a clean example with a fair asking price and solid maintenance history.
