CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW X5
Summary
With 30 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,820 CAD, 33.3% of 2016 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW X5 4.75 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury SUV that still puts driving feel at the centre of the experience. It sits on a rear-wheel-drive platform, uses inline-six or V8 engines, and comes with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard in Canada. It is also described as not being designed for off-road use, with moderately challenging trails being the limit, especially on versions with larger wheels and performance tyres.
Inside, the X5 is a midsize, two-row, five-passenger SUV with a roomy cabin, outstanding visibility, and generous cargo space. One drawback is BMW’s split tailgate design, which can make it harder to reach items that have slid forward to the base of the back seat. For buyers, that mix of comfort, practicality, and a rewarding driving character is a big part of the appeal.
For this generation, the X5 also benefits from BMW’s ongoing improvements in technology and refinement. The 2016 model year sits within the third generation, which offered the latest versions of BMW’s iDrive infotainment technology and many modern safety features. It also had a small, optional third-row seat, and the 2016 plug-in hybrid powertrain used a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 23 kilometres of electric-only range and combined fuel consumption of 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres. The trade-off is that ownership can be costly: reliability is below average, and major maintenance or repairs are likely to cost more than average.

This is a great, solid, fuel-efficient car. It accelerates well, breaks easily, is quiet, and has room for luggage, etc. in the back. No emissions for most errands around town, and no EV distance anxiety if you are traveling.

Is the 2016 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the performance, luxurious interior, and sporty driving experience, and many say the engine feel is hard to beat compared with competitors. The X5 also fits well if you want a luxury SUV that still feels rewarding to drive while offering practical everyday versatility. With 40.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a compelling offer.
Is the 2016 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the SUV’s overall quality and the sense that it delivers a trouble-free, satisfying drive when properly maintained. That said, the model’s luxury positioning means you should still pay close attention to service records and maintenance history before you buy. For used shoppers, the main long-term ownership risk is not day-to-day usability so much as the potential cost of deferred maintenance or repairs on a premium SUV.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW X5?
This looks like a buyer-friendly market for you if you’re shopping carefully.
- Deal availability: 40.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 112 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.11% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,583 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $19,689 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,470 CAD.
That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X5 more attractive to used buyers today but less favourable for a future seller trying to maximise return. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle well maintained, you may be able to soften some of that depreciation impact. The model’s premium image and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, but resale will still depend heavily on condition, mileage, and service history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 40.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.11% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 BMW X5 makes the most sense if you want a luxury SUV with strong owner appeal, a sporty driving feel, and a market that currently favours buyers. If you’re price-sensitive, you should also compare nearby model years to see whether a similar X5 offers a better mix of equipment and asking price, especially if you can find one with a clear maintenance history and a strong condition report.
