Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 5 Series sits at an interesting point in the model’s evolution: it is still recognisably a 5 Series, but it had already shifted away from the sharper, more driver-focused character that defined earlier generations. In this generation, BMW gave buyers a more understated luxury sedan with a little bit of verve, and the regular models were described as having softer steering and less engaging responses than older versions. That makes the 2017 car appealing to shoppers who want a premium midsize sedan with BMW badge appeal and some performance credibility, even if it is not the most athletic 5 Series of its lineage.
For 2017, the G30 series launched with the 530i and 540i. The 530i used a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 540i used a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. In Canada, both came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. That combination gives the 2017 5 Series a broad appeal: the base model offers respectable efficiency and enough power for daily use, while the six-cylinder version adds a stronger performance edge.
The 2017 model also brought a good amount of technology and safety equipment. BMW fitted blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams, while some of the more advanced systems remained optional. Inside, the car used BMW’s iDrive system, and reviewers noted that the interface could be complex to learn. Overall, the 2017 BMW 5 Series stands out as a refined, well-equipped luxury sedan with strong engines and a polished feel, but one that had become a little less involving than the 5 Series models that came before it.

The 540i is a magnificent vehicle, and it looks like a dad car even though it can leave your daily WRX in the dust.

This turned out to be a base model with almost zero extra features other than a sunshade and all wheel drive with the upgraded engine. However i was anticipating a luxury sedan and got a luxury performance sedan. I was greatly surprised with the acceleration coupled with the ride quality and numerous technology features. I am going from a 2011 Cadillac cts coupe performance trim and the bmw is comparable in ride quality, but head and shoulders above it in acceleration and braking ability.
