CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Highlander

Summary
With 78 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,201 CAD, 32.1% of 2016 Toyota Highlander listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Highlander 4.93 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Highlander stands out as a practical, comfortable midsize SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and safety. By this generation, Toyota had given the Highlander a more upscale look and interior, and the SUV’s body was reinforced to improve comfort on the road. It also remains a genuinely versatile family vehicle, with up to 2,387 litres of cargo space with the seats folded down, which is one of the best figures in its class.
For 2016, the Highlander’s appeal also came from its mix of standard equipment and available technology. Every Highlander came with an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Toyota Safety Sense was standard and included lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, and automatic emergency braking. Buyers could also choose from a range of trims and features, including a Nightshade Edition, an XSE trim, and a Platinum package, with higher trims adding items such as heated second-row captain’s chairs, a rear-seat reminder system, a 360-degree camera, and a digital rear-view mirror.
Its strengths are easy to understand: it is spacious, comfortable, and well equipped, and the hybrid version is especially appealing for fuel-conscious shoppers. The main trade-offs are familiar Highlander ones: it is not especially exciting to drive, and the steering is described as numb and uncommunicative. Even so, for buyers who value a smooth ride, strong practicality, and long-term dependability, the 2016 Toyota Highlander makes a compelling case.

Has all the bells and whistles important to a grandmother hauling grandkids to ballgames and everything in between. Smooth as a cadillac ride, great power, and I love the auto liftgate and back up camera. Third row seats are handy to have and fold down flat. Toyota has a great reputation for lasting a long time, and I like to keep my cars many years. Drove a GMC Acadia prior to this car, and I prefer the Toyota.

Coming from a 13 Tucson that blew up on us without warning, this 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited is absolutely stunning. We are very pleased with the fit and finish on the Limited trim, the features are amazing, every single option. It rides so smooth and so quiet, has great power, great fuel economy. It has sharp lines outside, looks great inside, Toyota really did a great job with this vehicle. We are proud to be new members of the Toyota family. We hope for decades of good ownership within Toyota.

How much does the 2016 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,202 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $22,101 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $24,849 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,830 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.56% |
Prices have softened 6.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 78 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.9/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and the abundance of features it offers, and they also highlight the smooth ride and powerful V6 engine. That lines up well with its role as a practical, comfortable midsize SUV for families who want space, versatility, and a well-equipped cabin. With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and well suited to long-term use. That matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for daily family duty, commuting, and road trips without a lot of drama. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the Highlander’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained properly over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to make a good purchase possible.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 78 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.56% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,101 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $23,202 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,830 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has become a bit softer, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean future resale gains are limited if you overpay. If you plan to sell later, buying near the lower end of the range gives you more room to preserve value. The Highlander’s strong reputation and broad family appeal should still support steady demand among used-SUV shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped, comfortable, and highly rated used Highlander, the 2016 is a strong choice. If your priority is stretching your budget further, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, price, and maintenance history.
