CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW X3
Summary
With 70 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,831 CAD, 30.0% of 2016 BMW X3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW X3 4.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW X3 stands out as a compact luxury SUV that leans hard into BMW’s sporty side. It is smaller than the X5, but still aims to deliver premium features along with the agility and driving engagement the brand is known for. For buyers who want an SUV that feels more like a regular car on the road, that character is a major part of its appeal. It also offers the usual SUV advantages, including a high driving position and easy access, while remaining practical enough for everyday use.
What makes this generation especially appealing is the way it combines strong powertrains, high-quality interiors, and technology that was state-of-the-art for its time. The X3’s sporty feel is backed up by sharp handling and plenty of driving engagement, and it is not designed for off-road use. At the same time, it brings the premium cabin and luxury feel many shoppers expect from a BMW. Owners also tend to praise its smooth driving experience and powerful performance.
There are trade-offs, though. As a premium vehicle, the 2016 BMW X3 can bring higher maintenance and repair costs than similar non-luxury SUVs. Some rivals also offer more rear passenger space, and buyers should be mindful of the model’s reputation for ride quality and reliability concerns in earlier years of the line. Even so, for shoppers prioritising a refined, sporty, and upscale used SUV, the X3 remains a compelling choice.

Yes — the 2016 BMW X3 earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its smooth driving experience, powerful performance, and luxury features. It also fits well if you want a compact luxury SUV with sporty handling and a premium cabin for everyday use. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 BMW X3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, especially when the vehicle has been maintained properly. That said, as a used premium SUV, your long-term ownership risk is still tied to maintenance history and the possibility of higher repair costs than you might see with a non-luxury alternative.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW X3?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 129 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.45% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $14,168 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW X3's resale value?
The current average of $14,415 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,745 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can make the X3 easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at the right price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger hit later. Strong demand from shoppers who want a sporty, upscale compact SUV can still help support future resale interest.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW X3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2016 if you want the X3’s sporty handling, premium feel, and strong owner satisfaction at a softened price point. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2016 is the better path when you want a balance of value and the model’s core driving character.
