CarGurus Analysis: 2016 BMW X3
Summary
With 130 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,249 CAD, 30.8% of 2016 BMW X3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 BMW X3 4.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW X3 stands out as a compact luxury SUV that leans hard into BMW’s sporty side. It is smaller than the X5, but still aims to deliver premium features along with the agility and driving engagement the brand is known for. For buyers who want an SUV that feels more like a regular car on the road, that character is a major part of its appeal. It also offers the usual SUV advantages, including a high driving position and easy access, while remaining practical enough for everyday use.
What makes this generation especially appealing is the way it combines strong powertrains, high-quality interiors, and technology that was state-of-the-art for its time. The X3’s sporty feel is backed up by sharp handling and plenty of driving engagement, and it is not designed for off-road use. At the same time, it brings the premium cabin and luxury feel many shoppers expect from a BMW. Owners also tend to praise its smooth driving experience and powerful performance.
There are trade-offs, though. As a premium vehicle, the 2016 BMW X3 can bring higher maintenance and repair costs than similar non-luxury SUVs. Some rivals also offer more rear passenger space, and buyers should be mindful of the model’s reputation for ride quality and reliability concerns in earlier years of the line. Even so, for shoppers prioritising a refined, sporty, and upscale used SUV, the X3 remains a compelling choice.

For used buyers, that means the biggest reliability risk is less about the driving character and more about how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW X3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 130 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.22% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $14,172 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW X3's resale value?
The current average of $14,269 CAD sits slightly below last year's $16,442 CAD.
That price trend suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X3 easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be better positioned to protect value later. The current pricing also suggests future sellers may need to be realistic and competitive to attract buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW X3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the X3’s sporty handling, premium feel, and strong owner approval, the 2016 is a solid place to focus your search. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and prioritise whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, mileage, and asking price.
